    وَلا تَطعَما حَتّى الصَباحِ كَراكُما

    My two friends, arise—every day and every night;

    and taste no slumber until dawn.

    إِذا نُمتُما قَد فازَ فيها سِواكُما

    For winter’s dear little nights are delightful company;

    if you two sleep, someone else will have enjoyed them.

    Six things are now at hand in the wine gathering,

    each aptly according with what pleases you both:

    وَشَهدٌ وَشَربٌ يَشتَهي أَن يَراكُما

    candles, fragrant blossoms, a singer, and a gazelle-like youth;

    honey, and wine that longs to see you both.

    So do not deny me, you two, the pleasure of companionship,

    in which I delight; for I love that companionship, you two.

    And if this life is free of any hindrance,

    may the Merciful never grant you both fair consolation for its loss.
