You are my foe when you are certain I am near,

And a friend as close as a brother when I depart.

So I have come to grant you distance,

My excuse being the impossibility of accord.

Like the radiant sun’s words to the full moon,

In a tone of reproach and compassion:

“I gave you radiance, and light perfected

You on the night of shining.

And whenever you draw close to me,

I suffer an eclipse through you at our meeting.”

He said: “You are the one who begins, for when you are far,

I draw near to you like one who longs.

Yet whenever I rejoice in being near you,

Along with that joy comes my darkening.”
