ياO سادَةًlords مُذsince سَعَتstepped عَنaway from بابِهِمtheir door قَدَميmy foot
زَلَّتit slipped وَضاقَتand grew narrow بِيَaround me الأَمصارُthe cities وَالطُرُقُand the roads
O lords, since my foot stepped away from their door,
It has slipped, and cities and roads have closed in on me.
قَدindeed حارَبَwaged war on الصَبرَpatience وَالسَلوانَand solace بَعدَكُمُafter parting from you
قَلبيmy heart وَصالِحَand made peace with طَرفيmy eye الدَمعُtears وَالأَرَقُand sleeplessness
Since parting from you, war has been waged on patience and solace
By my heart; tears and sleeplessness have made peace with my eye.
وَدَوحَةُand the spreading tree الشِعرِpoetry مُذsince فارَقتُI parted from مَجدَكُمُyour glory
قَدindeed أَصبَحَتhas become بِهَجيرِin the scorching midday heat of الهَجرِseparation تَحتَرِقُburning
And poetry’s spreading tree, since I parted from your glory,
Is now burning in separation’s scorching midday heat.
فَإِنso if أَرَدتُمyou wish لَهاfor it البُقياsurvival بِقُربِكُمُthrough nearness to you
تَدارَكوهاrescue it in time وَفيwhile on أَغصانِهاits branches وَرَقُleaves
So if you wish it to survive through nearness to you,
Rescue it while its branches still bear leaves.
