أَلَستَdo you not تَرىsee ماwhat فيin العُيونِthe eyes مِنَof السُقمِsickness
لَقَدindeed نَحَلَhas borrowed المَعنىthe poetic conceit المُدَفَّقُpoured forth مِنfrom جِسميmy body
Do you not see the sickness in those eyes?
That overflowing conceit has indeed borrowed from my body.
وَأَضعَفُand the slightest ماwhat بِيَafflicts me بِالخُصورِin the waists مِنَof الضَناwasting
عَلىdespite أَنَّهاthat they مِنthrough ظُلمِهاtheir injustice غَصَبَتusurped قِسميmy share
And the wasting in those waists is but the least of mine,
though, in their injustice, they have usurped my share.
وَماand not ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept أَنَّthat يَومَthe day of وَداعِناour parting
لَقَدindeed غَفَلَتgrew heedless عَينُthe eye of الرَقيبِthe watcher عَلىdespite رُغمِreluctance
That was only because, on the day we parted,
the watcher's eye had grown heedless, despite himself.
ضَمَمتُI pressed ضَناthe wasting of جِسميmy body إِلىagainst ضُعفِthe frailty of خِصرِهاher waist
لِجِنسِيَّةٍthrough an affinity كانَتwas لَهُfor it عِلَّةَthe cause of الضَمِّthe embrace
I pressed my body's wasting against the frailty of her waist,
through an affinity that was the cause of that embrace.
رَبيبَةُخِدرٍa maiden reared in seclusion يَجرَحُwounds اللَحظُa glance خَدَّهاher cheek
فَوَجنَتُهاso her cheek تَدمىbleeds وَأَلحاظُهاand her glances تُدميdraw blood
A maiden reared in seclusion: a glance wounds her cheek;
so her cheek bleeds, while her glances draw blood.
يُكَلِّمُwounds لَفظيmy words خَدَّهاher cheek إِنif ذَكَرتُهُI mention it
وَيُؤلِمُهُand hurts it إِنif مَرَّpasses مَرآهُits image فيthrough وَهميmy imagination
My words wound her cheek if I mention it,
and hurt it if its image passes through my mind.
إِذاwhen اِبتَسَمَتshe smiles وَالفاحِمُwhile the coal-black hair الجَعدُcurly مُسبَلٌhangs loose
تُضِلُّshe leads astray وَتَهديand guides مِنthrough ظَلامٍdarkness وَمِنand through ظَلمِthe gleam of teeth
When she smiles, her coal-black curls hanging loose,
she leads astray with darkness and guides with the gleam of teeth.
تَغَزَّلتُI spoke love poetry فيهاabout her بِالغَزالِby likening her to a gazelle فَأَعرَضَتso she turned away
وَقالَتand she said لَعَمريby my life هَذِهِthis غايَةُthe utmost الذَمِّdisparagement
I wooed her in verse, likening her to a gazelle; she turned away
and said, 'By my life, this is the height of disparagement!'
وَصَدَّتand she recoiled وَقَدand indeed شَبَّهتُI had likened بِالبَدرِto the full moon وَجهَهاher face
نِفاراًin aversion وَقالَتand said صِرتَyou have come to تَطمَعُaspire فيto شَتميinsulting me
She recoiled when I likened her face to the full moon,
in aversion, saying, 'Now you aspire to insult me!'
وَكَمand how often قَدindeed بَذَلتُI offered النَفسَthe soul أَخطُبُseeking وَصلَهاunion with her
وَخاطَرتُand I risked فيهاfor her sake بِالنَفيسِwith what is precious عَلىwith عِلمِfull knowledge
How often I offered my soul, seeking union with her,
and knowingly risked what was precious for her sake.
فَلَمyet not تَلِدِbore الدُنياthe world لَناfor us غَيرَother than لَيلَةٍone night
نَعِمتُI delighted بِهاin it ثُمَّthen اِستَمَرَّتit remained عَلىin العُقمِbarrenness
Yet the world bore us no more than a single night;
I delighted in it; then the world remained barren.
فَياso O مَنyou who أَقامَتنيmade me خَطيباًan orator لِوَصفِهاto describe her
أُرَصِّعُI bejewel فيهاabout her اللَفظَthe words فيin النَثرِprose وَالنَظمِand verse
O you who made me an orator in her praise,
I bejewel my words about her in prose and verse.
خُذيtake الدُرَّthe pearls مِنfrom لَفظيmy words فَإِنand if شِئتِyou wish نَظمَهُto string them
وَأَعوَزَand is lacking سِلكٌa thread لِلنِظامِfor stringing فَهاthen here is جِسميmy body
Take the pearls from my words; if you wish to string them,
and lack a thread for the stringing, here is my body.
فَفيكِso for your sake هَجَرتُI forsook الأَهلَfamily وَالمالَand wealth وَالغِنىand affluence
وَرُتبَةَand the rank of دَستِthe throne of المُلكِkingship وَالجاهِand prestige وَالحُكمِand rule
For you I forsook family, wealth, and affluence,
and rank at the royal throne, prestige, and rule.
وَقُلتِand you said لَقَدindeed أَصبَحتَyou have become فيamong الحَيِّthe tribe مُفرِداًsolitary
صَدَقتِyou spoke truly فَهَلّاthen why not جازَextend عَفوُكِyour pardon فيto ظُلميmy wrongdoing
You said, 'You have become solitary among the tribe.'
You spoke truly; why, then, does your pardon not extend to my wrongdoing?
أَلَمhave you not تَشهَديwitnessed أَنّيthat I أُمَثَّلُam pictured لِلعِدىto my foes
فَتَسهَرَso they stay awake خَوفاًfor fear أَنthat تَرانِيَthey might see me فيin الحُلمِa dream
Have you not seen how my image is shown to my foes,
so they lie awake, fearing to see me in a dream?
فَكَمhow often then طَمِعواthey set their hopes فيon وِحدَتيmy solitude فَرَمَيتُهُمso I struck them
بِأَضيَقَwith something narrower مِنthan سُمٍّa needle's eye وَأَقتَلَand deadlier مِنthan سُمِّpoison
How often they set their hopes upon my solitude, and I struck them
with what is narrower than a needle's eye and deadlier than poison.
وَكَمand how often أَجَّجواthey kindled نارَthe fire of الحُروبِwars وَأَقبَلواand advanced
بِجَيشٍwith an army يَصُدُّthat bars السيلَthe torrent عَنfrom مَربَضِthe resting place of العُصمِibexes
How often they kindled war's fire and advanced
with an army that bars the torrent from the ibexes' resting place;
فَلَمbut not يَسمَعواthey heard إِلّاexcept صَليلَthe ringing of مُهَنَّديmy Indian blade
وَصَوتَand the sound of زَئيريmy roaring بَينَamid قَعقَعَةِthe clatter of اللُجمِbridles
yet they heard only the ringing of my Indian blade
and my roar amid the clatter of bridles.
جَعَلتُهُمُI made them نَهباًplunder لِسَيفِيَfor my sword وَمِقوَليand my tongue
فَهُمso they فيare in وَبالٍruin مِنfrom كَلاميmy words وَمِنand from كَلّميmy wounding
I made them plunder for my sword and my tongue,
so they suffer ruin from my words and the wounds I deal.
تَوَدُّwish العِدىmy foes لَوthat يُحدِقُwould close in اِسمُthe name of أَبيmy father بِهاaround them
وَأَلّاand that not تُفاجاthey be surprised فيon مَجالِthe field of الوَغىbattle بِاِسميby my name
My foes wish my father's name would surround them,
rather than be surprised by my name on the battlefield.
تُعَدَّدُare recounted أَفعاليmy deeds وَتِلكَand those مَناقِبٌare merits
فَتَذكُرُنيso they mention me بِالمَدحِwith praise فيin مَعرِضِthe guise of الذَمِّblame
My deeds are recounted—and those are merits—
so they praise me in the guise of blame.
وَلَوeven if جَحَدواthey denied فِعليmy deeds مَخافَةَfor fear of شامِتٍa gloating foe
لَنَمَّwould surely tell tales عَلَيهِمagainst them فيon جِباهِهِمُtheir foreheads وَسميmy brand
Even if they denied my deeds for fear of a gloating foe,
my brand upon their foreheads would betray them.
فَكَيفَhow then وَلَمand not يُنسَبwas linked زَعيمٌa chief لِسِنبِسٍof Sinbis
إِلىto المَجدِglory إِلّاexcept كانَhe was خالِيَmy maternal uncle أَوor عَمّيmy paternal uncle
How otherwise, when no chief of Sinbis was linked
to glory unless he was my maternal or paternal uncle?
وَإِنand if أَشبَهَتهُمresemble them فيin الفَخارِglory خَلائِقيmy qualities
وَفِعليand my deeds فَهَذاthen this الراحُwine مِنfrom ذَلِكَthat الكَرمِvine
And if my qualities resemble theirs in glory,
and my deeds, this wine comes from that vine.
فَقُلso say لِلأَعاديto the foes ماnot اِنثَنَيتُI turned back لِسَبِّكُمbecause of your insults
وَلاnor طاشَwent astray فيin ظَنّيmy suspicion لِغَدرِكُمُregarding your treachery سَهميmy arrow
Tell my foes: I have not yielded to your insults,
nor did my arrow miss when I suspected your treachery.
نَظَرناwe considered خَطاياكُمyour sins فَأَغرَيتُمُso you incited بِناagainst us
كَذاthus مَنone who أَعانَhelped الظالِمينَthe oppressors عَلىin الظُلمِoppression
We considered your sins, and you incited others against us—
thus fares one who helps oppressors to oppress.
أَسَأتُمyou did wrong فَإِنso if أَسخَطI am angry عَلَيكُمwith you فَبِالرِضىthen willingly
وَإِنand if أَرضَI am pleased عَنكُمwith you مِنout of حَيائيmy modesty فَبِالرَغمِthen unwillingly
You did wrong; if I am angry with you, it is willingly,
and if I am pleased with you out of modesty, it is unwillingly.
لَجَأتُI sought refuge إِلىin رُكنٍa pillar شَديدٍmighty لِحَربِكُمto fight you
أَشُدُّI strengthen بِهِthrough him أَزريmy back وَأُعليand raise بِهِthrough him نَجميmy star
I sought refuge in a mighty pillar to wage war on you;
through him I strengthen my back and raise my star.
وَظَلتُand I remained كَأَنّيas though I أَملِكُpossess الدَهرَtime عِزَّةًin might
فَلاso not تَنزِلُdescend الأَيّامُthe days إِلّاexcept عَلىat حُكميmy command
And in my might I remained as though I ruled time,
so that the days descend only at my command,
بِأَروَعَthrough an imposing man مَبنِيٍّfixed عَلىin الفَتحِopenness كَفُّهُhis palm
إِذاwhen بُنِيَتis fixed كَفُّthe palm of اللَئيمِthe miser عَلىin الضَمِّclosure
through an imposing man whose hand is fixed wide open,
while the miser's hand is fixed clenched shut.
مَلاذيmy refuge جَلالُJalal الدينِal-Din نَجلُson of مَحاسِنٍMahasin
حَليفُally of العَفافِvirtue الطَلقِgracious وَالنائِلِand bounty الجَمِّabundant
My refuge is Jalal al-Din, son of Mahasin,
ally of gracious virtue and abundant bounty,
فَتىًa youth خُلِقَتwere created كَفّاهُhis two hands لِلجودِfor generosity وَالسَطاand striking
كَماjust as العَينُthe eye لِلإِبصارِfor seeing وَالأَنفُand the nose لِلشَمِّfor smelling
a youth whose two hands were made for giving and striking,
as the eye was for seeing and the nose for smelling.
لَهُhe has قَلَمٌa pen فيهِin it المَنِيَّةُdeath وَالمُنىand hopes
فَديمَتُهُso its steady rain تَهميpours down وَسَطوَتُهُand its onslaught تُصميkills outright
He has a pen in which lie death and hopes;
its steady rain pours down, and its onslaught strikes dead:
يَراعٌa reed-pen يَروعُterrifies الخَطبَcalamity فيin حالَةِa state of الرِضىfavor
وَيُضرِمُand kindles نارَthe fire of الحَربِwar فيin حالَةِa state of السِلمِpeace
a reed-pen that terrifies calamity in times of favor,
and kindles war's fire in times of peace.
وَعَضبٌand a keen sword كَأَنَّas though المَوتَdeath عاهَدَmade a pact with حَدَّهُits edge
وَصالَand it charged فَأَفنىthen annihilated جِرمُهُits body كُلَّevery ذيpossessor of جِرمِguilt
And a keen sword, as though death had made a pact with its edge;
it charged, its body annihilating all who bore guilt.
فَياso O مَنyou whose رَعاناwatched over us طَرفُهُhis eye وَهُوَwhile he راقِدٌwas sleeping
وَقَدwhen already قَلتِhad grown few النُصّارُthe supporters بِالعَزمِwith resolve وَالحَزمِand prudence
O you whose eye watched over us even while you slept,
when supporters of resolve and prudence had grown few:
يَدُthe hand of الدَهرِtime أَلقَتناcast us إِلَيكَtoward you فَإِنso if نُطِقwe can manage
لَهاof it مَلمَساًa touch أَدمىwould make bleed بِراجِمِهاits knuckles لَثميmy kisses
Time's hand cast us toward you; if we could only
touch it, my kisses would make its knuckles bleed.
أَطَعتُكَI obeyed you جُهديto my utmost فَاِحتَفِظso take care بيof me فَإِنَّنيfor I
لِنَصرِكَin supporting you لاnot يَنفَلُّwill be blunted جَدّيmy zeal وَلاnor عَزميmy resolve
I have obeyed you to my utmost; protect me, for I
shall never flag in zeal or resolve in your support.
فَإِنso if غِبتَyou are absent فَاِجعَلthen appoint ليfor me وَلِيّاًa protector مِنَagainst الأَذىharm
وَهَيهاتَbut alas لاnot يُغنيcan substitute الوَلِيُّthe later rain عَنِfor الوَسميthe first autumn rain
If you are absent, appoint me a protector against harm—
but alas, the later rain cannot replace the first autumn rain.
