تَغانَ بِالحَشيشِ عَنِ الرَحيقِ

تَغانَ بِالحَشيشِ عَنِ الرَحيقِ

وَبِالوَرَقِ الجَديدِ عَنِ العَتيقِ

وَبِالوَرَقِ الجَديدِ عَنِ العَتيقِ

Content yourself with hashish instead of pure wine,

Intoxicated with hashish over wine

And with fresh leaves instead of aged wine,

And with new leaves over the aged vine

وَبِالخَضراءِ عَن حَمراءَ صَرفٍ

وَبِالخَضراءِ عَن حَمراءَ صَرفٍ

وَكَم بَينَ الزُمُرُّدِ وَالعَقيقِ

وَكَم بَينَ الزُمُرُّدِ وَالعَقيقِ

And with the green herb instead of unmixed red wine—

And with the green over red wine forsaken

And what a difference between emerald and agate!

Such difference lies between emerald and ruby gems

مُدامٌ في الجُيوبِ تُصانُ عِزّاً

مُدامٌ في الجُيوبِ تُصانُ عِزّاً

وَتُشرَبُ فَوقَ قارِعَةِ الطَريقِ

وَتُشرَبُ فَوقَ قارِعَةِ الطَريقِ

A wine kept safe in pockets, held in honor,

Wines concealed in pockets guarded with honor

And drunk in the middle of the road.

And drunk atop the clamoring road

يَظَلُّ سَحيقُها في الكَفِّ يَهزا

يَظَلُّ سَحيقُها في الكَفِّ يَهزا

بِطيبِ رَوائِحِ المِسكِ السَحيقِ

بِطيبِ رَوائِحِ المِسكِ السَحيقِ

Its powder in the palm keeps mocking

Its exaltation continues to tremble in the palm

The sweet fragrances of powdered musk.

With the sweet fragrances of thick musk

فَعاقِرُها وَطَلَّقَ ما سِواها

فَعاقِرُها وَطَلَّقَ ما سِواها

تَعِش في الناسِ ذا وَجِهِ طَليقِ

تَعِش في الناسِ ذا وَجِهِ طَليقِ

So drink it, and divorce all else;

Renounce all else and divorce what isn't it

You will live among people with a cheerful face.
