لَوeven if صِرتُI became مِنfrom سَقَميmy sickness شَبيهَlike سِواكِa toothstick
ماnot اِختَرتُI would choose مِنfrom دونِapart from الأَنامِhumankind سِواكِanyone but you
Even if, through sickness, I became like a toothstick,
I would choose none but you from all humankind.
لاmay not فُزتُI escape مِنfrom أَشراكِthe snares حُبِّكِof your love سالِماًunharmed
إِنif شُبتُI tainted دَينَthe faith هَواكِof loving you بِالإِشراكِwith polytheism
May I never escape unharmed from the snares of your love,
if I taint the faith of loving you with worship of another.
ياO مَنyou whom سَمَحتُI gave freely لَهاto her بِروحيwith my soul فيin الهَوىlove
أَرخَصتِنيyou cheapened me وَعَلَيَّyet to me ماhow أَغلاكِdear you are
O you to whom I freely gave my soul in love,
you held me cheap—yet how dear you are to me!
أَخرَبتِyou ruined قَلبيmy heart إِذwhen مَلَكتِyou possessed صَميمَهُits core
أَكَداis this how يَكونُis تَصَرُّفُthe conduct المُلّاكِof owners
You laid my heart waste when you possessed its core;
is this how owners behave?
كَيفَhow اِستَبَحتِyou deemed lawful دَمَthe blood المُحِبِّof the lover وَلَمand not يَكُنhad been
قَلبيmy heart عَصاكِdisobeyed you وَلاnor شَقَقتُI split عَصاكِyour staff
How could you deem your lover's blood lawful, when
my heart had not disobeyed you, nor had I rebelled against your rule?
هَلdid عَندَمُcrimson dye الوَجَناتِof the cheeks رَخَّصَgave permission فيregarding دَميmy blood
أَمor طَرفِكِyour gaze الفَتّاكُmurderous قَدalready أَفتاكِgave you a legal ruling
Did the crimson dye of your cheeks license my bloodshed,
or has your murderous gaze pronounced it lawful for you?
أَصَغَيتِyou lent سَمعاًan ear لِلوُشاةِto the talebearers فَتارَةًso at times
أَخشىI fear عَليكَfor you وَتارَةًand at times أَخشاكِI fear you
You lent your ear to the talebearers; at times
I fear for you, and at times I fear you.
أَطلَقتِyou unleashed فيin إِفشاءِdivulging أَسرارِthe secrets الهَوىof love
دَمعيmy tears وَقاكِprotected you فَماso how أَقَلُّlittle وَفاكِyour loyalty
You unleashed, to divulge the secrets of love,
my tears; they protected you—how scant your loyalty!
شَمِتَgloated العُداةُthe enemies وَلاand not مَلَكتِyou controlled صِيانَةًas protection
لَكِfor you فاكِyour mouth عَنfrom إِيضاحِهِمdisclosure to them لَكَفاكِit would have sufficed you
The enemies gloated; you failed to guard
your mouth from disclosure to them, for your own protection—that would have sufficed you.
وَلَقَدand indeed أُمَوِّهُI disguise بِالغَوانيwith fair women وَالمَهاand oryx
خَوفَfor fear العِدىof enemies وَأَصُدُّand I turn away عَنfrom ذِكراكِmentioning you
Indeed, I disguise my meaning with fair women and oryx,
fearing the enemies, and refrain from mentioning you.
إِذsince لَمnot يَكُنthere was لَكِfor you فيin التَغَزُّلِlove poetry بِالمَهاabout oryx
لَقَبٌan epithet وَلاnor أَسماهُnamed it مَنthe one who أَسماكِnamed you
For in love poetry about oryx, you had
no epithet, nor had your namer bestowed such a name.
زَعَمَclaimed العُداةُthe enemies بِأَنَّthat حُسنَكِyour beauty ناقِصٌdeficient
حاشاكِfar be it from you مِنfrom قَولِthe words العِدىof enemies حاشاكِfar be it from you
The enemies claimed your beauty was deficient.
Far above the enemies' words are you—far above!
قالَواthey said حَكَيتِyou resembled البَدرَthe full moon وَهيَand that is نَقيصَةٌa shortcoming
البَدرُthe full moon لَوif يُعطىwere granted المُنىits wishes لَحَكاكِit would resemble you
They said you resembled the full moon—and that is a slight:
if the full moon were granted its wishes, it would resemble you.
لِمwhy صَيَّرواthey made تَشبيهَهُمtheir comparison لَكِof you شُبهَةًa ground for suspicion
أَتُراكِcould it be you مَكَّنتِyou allowed العِداةَthe enemies تُراكِto see you
Why did they make their comparison of you a ground for suspicion?
Could it be you let the enemies see you?
إِنّيindeed I لَأُصغيdo listen لِلوُشاةِto the talebearers تَمَلُّقاًin flattery
لَهُمُtoward them فَأُرضيand so I appease الكاشِحينَthe spiteful بِذاكِby that
I do listen to the talebearers, flattering
them, and thereby appease the spiteful.
وَأَظَلُّand I remain مُبتَسِماًsmiling لِفَرطِfrom the intensity of تَعَجُّبيmy amazement
فَالسِنُّso the tooth ضاحِكَةٌlaughing وَقَلبيwhile my heart باكِweeping
And I go on smiling from sheer amazement:
so my teeth laugh, while my heart weeps.
