رعى الله قوما أوحشونا بقربهم

فقربهم منا كبعدهم عنا

May God watch over a people who made us desolate by their very nearness;

May God watch over a people who left us forlorn by their nearness.

for their nearness to us is like their distance from us.

أقاموا على الإعراض مع قرب دارهم

أقاموا على الإعراض مع قرب دارهم

فكان أشد البين قربهم منا

فكان أشد البين قربهم منا

They persisted in turning away, though their home was near,

They persisted in turning away despite the nearness of their dwelling.

and so their nearness to us became the harshest separation.

So their nearness to us was the bitterest separation.
