وَكُنّاand we had سَأَلناwe asked اللَهَGod يَجمَعُto bring together بَينَناbetween us
وَيَقضيand decree لَناfor us بِالقُربِwith nearness مِنكُمto you وَيَحكُمُand ordain
And we had asked God to bring us together,
We had asked God to reunite us
And decree nearness to you for us, and ordain it,
And to let us be close to you, to rule for us,
وَنَجلوand we dispel بِأَيّامِwith days السُرورِof joy وَنورِهاand their light
لَيالِيَnights أَحزانٍof sorrow بِهاin them العَيشُlife مُظلِمُdark
And that, with days of joy and their light, we might dispel
And to bring back for us days of happiness and their light,
Nights of sorrow in which life is dark.
Nights of sorrows in which life was gloomy.
فَلَمّاthen when أَنِسناwe took comfort مِنكُمُfrom you بِخَلائِقٍin qualities
تُصَدِّقُconfirm ماwhat تَرويrecount الخَلائِقُpeople عَنكُمُabout you
But when we took comfort in qualities of yours
When we were pleased by your good manners
That confirmed what people recount about you,
That confirmed what good manners say of you,
تَباعَدتُمُyou drew away لاmay not أَبعَدَmake distant اللَهُGod دارَكُمyour home
وَأَوحَشتُمُand you left us desolate وَلاand may not أَوحَشَleave us bereft اللَهُGod مِنكُمُof you
You drew away—may God never make your home distant—
You kept your distance, may God not banish you far,
And left us desolate—may God never leave us bereft of you.
You became distant, may God not make you strangers.
