لَعَمرُكَby your life لاnot يُغنيavails الفَتىthe young man طيبُgoodness أَصلِهِhis origin
لَعَمرُكَ لا يُغني الفَتى طيبُ أَصلِهِ
وَقَدand indeed خالَفَhe went against الآباءَthe forefathers فيin القَولِspeech وَالفِعلِand action
وَقَد خالَفَ الآباءَ في القَولِ وَالفِعلِ
By your life, a young man's good lineage avails him nothing
By your life! Good ancestry avails not the ignoble man,
when he has gone against his forefathers in word and deed.
Who contradicts his forbears in deed and word.
فَقَدfor indeed صَحَّit was established أَنَّthat الخَمرَwine رِجسٌan impurity مُحَرَّمٌforbidden
فَقَد صَحَّ أَنَّ الخَمرَ رِجسٌ مُحَرَّمٌ
وَماyet not شَكَّdoubted خُلقٌanyone أَنَّهُthat it طَيِّبُgood الأَصلِin origin
وَما شَكَّ خُلقٌ أَنَّهُ طَيِّبُ الأَصلِ
For it is established that wine is a forbidden impurity,
Now it is certain that wine is forbidden and impure,
yet no one has doubted that it is of good origin.
Yet goodly its origin was held by men of old.
