وَحَقِّby the sanctity of الهَوىlove ماnot حُلتُI turned away يَوماًa single day عَنِfrom الهَوىlove
وَلَكِنَّand yet نَجميmy star فيin المَحَبَّةِlove قَدindeed هَوىhas fallen
By the sanctity of love, I never once turned away from love,
By the right of passion, never have I been free of passion
Yet in love my star has fallen.
Yet my star in love has fallen
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَرجوhoping for وَصلَunion with مَنone who قَتليmy killing نَوىintended
وَأَضنىand wore out فُؤاديmy heart بِالقَطيعَةِthrough estrangement وَالنَوىand separation
Nor did I hope for union with one who intended to kill me,
I hoped not for the union of one who wished my death
And wore out my heart with estrangement and separation.
And my heart languished with separation and avoidance
لَيسَthere is no فيin الهَوىlove عَجَبُwonder
إِنif أَصابَنيbefell me النَصَبُweariness
In love, it is no wonder
In passion there's no wonder
If weariness has befallen me.
If sorrow has struck me
حامِلُbearer of الهَوىlove تَعِبُweary
يَستَفِزُّهُstirs him الطَرَبُrapture
The bearer of love is weary;
The passionate bears fatigue
Rapture stirs him.
Incited by rapture
أَخوcompanion of الحُبِّlove لاnever يَنفَكُّceases to be صَبّاًlovesick مُتَيَّماenthralled by love
غَريقَdrowned in دُموعٍtears قَلبُهُhis heart يَشتَكيcomplains of الظَماthirst
Love's companion is ever lovesick and enthralled,
A brother of love ceaselessly cries, despairing
He drowns in tears, while his heart complains of thirst.
His heart drowning in tears, complaining of thirst
لِفَرطِfrom excessive البُكاweeping قَدindeed صارَhe has become جِلداًskin وَأَعظُماand bones
فَلاso no عَجَبٌwonder إِنif يَمزُجَhe mingles الدَمعَtears بِالدِماwith blood
From excessive weeping, he has become skin and bones,
Excessive weeping made his skin into callouses and bones
So it is no wonder if he mingles tears with blood.
No wonder he mixes tears with blood
الغَرامُpassion أَنحَلَهُhas wasted him
إِذsince أَصابَit struck مَقتَلَهُhis vital spot
Passion has wasted him,
Passion undid him
For it struck his vital spot.
When it brought his ruin
إِنif بَكىhe weeps يُحَقُّis justified لَهُfor him
لَيسَis not ماwhat بِهِafflicts him لَعِبُa game
If he weeps, he is justified;
If he cries he's entitled
What afflicts him is no game.
There's no jest in his state
أَلاtake heed قُلsay لِذاتِto the woman with الخالِthe beauty mark ياO رَبَّةَmistress of الذَكاbrilliance
وَمَنand she who بِضِياءِwith the radiance of الوَجهِthe face فاقَتexcelled عَلىover ذُكاDhukā, the sun
Now tell the woman with the beauty mark: O mistress of brilliance,
Say to the cheek's dearest, O lady of grace
And you whose radiant face outshone Dhukā, the sun!
She of radiant face, surpassing splendor
شَكَوتُI lamented غَراميmy passion لَوif only رَثَيتِyou had pitied لِمَنfor the one who شَكاlamented
وَأَطلَقتِand you unleashed دَمعيmy tears لَوif only شَفىcould heal الدَمعُtears مَنthe one who بَكىwept
I lamented my passion—if only you had pitied the one who lamented!
I complained of my passion - if you had pitied one who complained
And you unleashed my tears—if only tears could heal the one who wept!
And shed a tear - if tears could cure one who wept
فَاِنثَنَيتِthen you turned away ساهِيَةًheedless
وَالقُلوبُwhile the hearts واهِيَةًwere frail
Then you turned away, heedless,
Then you laughed heedlessly
While hearts were frail;
With hearts uncaring
تَضحَكينَyou laugh لاهِيَةًcarefree
وَالمُحِبُّwhile the lover يَنتَحِبُsobs
You laugh, carefree,
Playing absentmindedly
While the lover sobs.
While the lover laments
أَسَرتِyou imprisoned فُؤاديmy heart حينَwhen أَطلَقتِyou released عَبرَتيmy tears
وَبَدَّلتِنيand you exchanged for me مِنin place of مُنيَتيmy desire بِمَنيَّتيwith my death
You imprisoned my heart when you set my tears free,
You captivated my heart when you let flow my tears
And gave me my death in place of my desire.
And changed my demise into my wish
وَلَمّاand when رَأَيتِyou saw السُقمَsickness أَنحَلَhad wasted مُهجَتيmy soul
تَعَجَّبتِyou marveled مِنat سُقميmy sickness وَأَنكَرتِand you denied قِتلَتيmy slaying
And when you saw that sickness had wasted my soul,
And when you saw my sickness you ignored my torment
You marveled at my sickness and denied killing me.
You wondered at my illness and denied my murder
صِرتِyou have come to إِنif بَداappeared أَلَميmy pain
عِندَماwhen أَرَقتِyou spilled دَميmy blood
You have come, whenever my pain appears,
You acted, if my pain appeared,
When you have spilled my blood,
When you kept me sleepless,
تَعجَبينَyou marvel مِنat سَقَميmy sickness
صِحَّتيmy health هِيَit العَجَبُthe wonder
To marvel at my sickness;
Surprised at my sickness
It is my health that is the wonder.
My health is the wonder
تَحَجَّبتِyou veiled yourself عَنfrom عَينيmy sight فَأَيقَنتُso I became certain بِالشَقاof misery
وَآيَسَنيand made me despair فَرطُthe excess of الحِجابِconcealment مِنَof البَقاsurvival
You veiled yourself from my sight, so I became certain of misery;
You veiled from my eyes so I despaired of life
And your excessive concealment made me despair of survival.
The excess of the veil made me hopeless of remaining
فَلَمّاso when أَمَطتُI removed السِترَthe veil وَاِرتَحتُand I found solace بِاللِقاin the meeting
غَضِبتِyou grew angry بِلاwithout ذَنبٍa fault وَعاوَدتِنيand you returned to me لِقاmeeting
Then, when I drew aside the veil and found solace in meeting you,
But when I lifted the veil and was comforted by the vision
You grew angry though I was blameless, and met me once again.
You angrily blamed me without cause and repeated rejection
حينَwhen تُرفَعُare lifted الحُجُبُthe veils
مِنكِfrom you يَصدُرُarises الغَضَبُanger
When the veils are lifted,
When veils are lifted
Anger comes from you.
Anger comes from you
كُلَّماwhenever اِنقَضىhas ended سَبَبُa cause
مِنكَfrom you عادَنيreturned to me سَبَبُa cause
Whenever one cause has ended,
Whenever the reason ends
Another cause from you returns to me.
A reason returns from you
