زارَvisited وَصِبغُand the dye الظَلامِdarkness قَدalready نَصَلاfaded
بَدرٌa full moon جَلاunveiled الشَمسَthe sun فيin الظَلامِthe darkness أَلاbehold
He visited when the dye of darkness had faded,
The moon shone in the dark
a full moon that unveiled the sun in darkness—behold!
Dawn came dispelling gloom
جاءَcame وَسِجفُand the veil الظَلامِdarkness
قَدalready فُتِقاwas torn open فَاِعجَبَso marvel
He came while the veil of darkness
His face illuminated the dusk
had been torn open—so marvel!
And made the night recoil
وَالصِبحُand dawn لَمdid not يُبقِleave
فيin الدُجىthe gloom رَمَقاa remnant of life
and dawn had not left
The herald of morn arrived
a breath of life in the gloom.
My life for the full moon in human form
وَقَدand already جَلاdispelled نورُthe light وَجهِهِhis face
الغَسَقاthe dusk
And the light of his face had dispelled
He came in beauty unmatched
the dusk,
His cheek grazes my glance
وَأَدهَمُand the black steed اللَيلِnight مِنهُfrom him قَدalready جَفَلاbolted
وَقَدand already أَتىcame رائِدُthe herald الصَباحِmorning عَلىupon
and night's black steed had bolted from him.
A cheek burnished by bliss
And morning's herald had arrived upon
As though it would blush with my blood
أَفديهِI would ransom him بَدراًa full moon فيin
قالِبِthe form البِشَرِhumankind أَشهَبa gray steed
I would ransom him—a full moon in
O you whose beauty shades a inviolate abode
a human form—a gray steed.
A branch and cheek that if darkened would rule
قَدalready جاءَcame فيin حُسنِهِhis beauty
عَلىin accordance with قَدَرِdue measure
He had come in his beauty
The curled hair guards the temple
in due measure.
And the guardian of the law made from it
يَرتَعُgrazes فيin رَوضِthe meadow
خَدِّهِhis cheek نَظَريmy gaze
Grazing in the meadow
Will you not learn from your love for me, O Scorpion
of his cheek is my gaze.
From the aided king, the son of Ali
خَدٌّa cheek بِلُطفِwith the softness النَعيمِluxury قَدalready صُقِلاwas polished
كَأَنَّهُas though it مِنfrom دَميmy blood إِذاwhen خَجَلاhe blushes
A cheek polished by the softness of luxury,
The sultan of an era called Guardian of the Saints
as though it were of my blood when he blushes.
Without his hands the world would not have united
ياO مَنyou who غَداbecame ظِلُّthe shade
حُسنِهِhis beauty حَرَماًa sanctuary يُخضَبis dyed
O you, the shade
As if the people were in a starless sky
of whose beauty became a sanctuary—it is dyed.
A king whose meanings are sanctuaries for the world
لَمّاsince حَوىhe possessed ماthat which بِهِwith it
Since he possessed that with which
Generosity reaches his highness
Beauty kept guard:
He flooded the people with his valley of virtue
فَرعاًtresses وَصُدغاًand a temple-curl إِنif
حُكِّماboth were made judges ظَلَماboth acted unjustly
tresses and a temple-curl, if
A raincloud of munificence poured on the world
made judges, both would act unjustly.
With no lightning withholding bounty
فَأَرقَمُso the speckled serpent الجَعدَthe curly hair تَحرُسُguards الكَفَلاthe hips
وَحارِسُand the guardian الحَدِّthe boundary مِنهُof him قَدalready جُعِلاwas made
So the speckled serpent of his curls guards his hips,
The guardians have become, through him
and the guardian of his boundary has been made
A refuge for mankind, hosting a king peerless among kings
هَلّاwhy not تَعَلَّمتَyou learned بَذلَbestowing

وُدِّكَyour affection ليto me عَقرَبa scorpion
Why have you not learned to bestow
A sea plunged in sciences
your affection on me—a scorpion—
A king who guarantees people's livelihoods

Were it not for favors with which he embraced mankind,
A slave created to love you intensely
people would become like the sky without
Whether standing or traveling, over you perpetually

a refuge for mankind—rainless lightning.

the kings has risen,

tempestuous.

A king who has guaranteed mankind's sustenance,
so his generosity has become a byword among people.
