تَوَقّواbeware of النِساءَwomen فَإِنَّfor indeed النِساءَwomen
تَوَقّوا النِساءَ فَإِنَّ النِساءَ
نَقَصنَthey are deficient حُظوظاًin allotted shares وَعَقلاًand in intellect وَديناand in religion
نَقَصنَ حُظوظاً وَعَقلاً وَدينا
Beware of women, for women
Beware of women, for women
are deficient in shares, intellect, and religion.
Are deficient in fortune, reason, and religion.
وَكُلٌّand each بِهِwith it جاءَcame نَصُّthe text الكِتابِof the Book
وَكُلٌّ بِهِ جاءَ نَصُّ الكِتابِ
وَأَوضَحَand made clear فيهِin it دَليلاًa proof مُبيناmanifest
وَأَوضَحَ فيهِ دَليلاً مُبينا
And the text of the Book has set forth each,
And everyone in whom deficiency came
and made clear therein a manifest proof.
The Book's text clarified and explained clearly.
فَأَمّاso as for الدَليلُthe proof لِنَقصِfor the deficiency of الحُظوظِthe allotted shares
فَأَمّا الدَليلُ لِنَقصِ الحُظوظِ
فَإِرثُهُمُso their inheritance نِصفُhalf إِرثِthe inheritance of البَنيناthe sons
فَإِرثُهُمُ نِصفُ إِرثِ البَنينا
So, as for the proof of deficient shares,
As for the evidence of deficiency in fortune,
their inheritance is half the sons' inheritance.
It is their inheritance being half the males'.
وَنَقصُand the deficiency of العُقولِintellects فَإِجراؤُهُنَّthus, their being reckoned
وَنَقصُ العُقولِ فَإِجراؤُهُنَّ
بِنِصفِat half of الشَهادَةِthe testimony فيamong الشاهَدَيناthe witnesses
بِنِصفِ الشَهادَةِ في الشاهَدَينا
And deficiency of intellect is their being counted
And the deficiency of reason is evidenced
at half the testimony among witnesses.
By their testimony being half of two men's.
وَحَسبُكَand sufficient for you مِنof نَقصِthe deficiency of أَديانِهِنَّtheir religions
وَحَسبُكَ مِن نَقصِ أَديانِهِنَّ
ماwhat لَستَyou are not تَزدادُgrowing فيهِabout it يَقيناin certainty
ما لَستَ تَزدادُ فيهِ يَقينا
And sufficient proof of their deficient religion
And deficiency in their religion should suffice you
is what you cannot grow more certain of:
What you will not increase in certainty.
فَواتُthe omission of الصَلاةِprayer وَتَركُand the abandonment of الصِيامِfasting
فَواتُ الصَلاةِ وَتَركُ الصِيامِ
فيduring مُدَّةِthe period of الحَيضِmenstruation حيناًat one time فَحيناthen another time
في مُدَّةِ الحَيضِ حيناً فَحينا
missing prayer and forgoing fasting
Missing prayers and breaking fasts
during the menstrual period, time after time.
During menstruation time and again.
فَلاso do not تُطمِعوهُنَّraise their hopes يَوماًon any day فَقَدfor perhaps
فَلا تُطمِعوهُنَّ يَوماً فَقَد
تَكونُbe النَدامَةُregret مِنهُfrom it سِنيناfor years
تَكونُ النَدامَةُ مِنهُ سِنينا
So never raise their hopes, for
So do not let them have hopes one day, for
regret for it may last for years.
Regret from it may last for years.
