أَصَدّاًrejection? وَسُخطاًand wrath كَيفَhow يَحكُمُhe decrees
أَلَيسَis there not لَهُfor him قَلبٌa heart يَرُقُّsoftens فَيَرحَمُand so shows mercy
How can he decree rejection and wrath?
Has he no heart to soften and show mercy?
أَأَرضىshall I consent بِقَتليto my being slain فيin الهَوىlove وَهوَwhile he is ساخِطٌdispleased
وَأَبسِطُand I lay out أَعذاريmy excuses لَهُto him وَهوَwhile he is مُجرِمُguilty
Shall I accept being slain in love while he is displeased,
And lay my excuses before him, though he is the guilty one?
نَبِيُّa prophet جَمالٍof beauty لِلغَرامِfor passion مُشَرِّعٌa lawgiver
يُحَلِّلُhe makes lawful ماwhat يَختارُهُhe chooses it وَيُحَرِّمُand makes unlawful
A prophet of beauty, a lawgiver for passion,
He permits and forbids whatever he chooses.
يُريناhe shows us خُدودَthe cheeks المُحسِنينَof those who do good ضَوارِعاًhumbly submissive
لَدَيهِbefore him وَأَقدامَand the feet المُسيئينَof wrongdoers تُلثَمُare kissed
He shows us the cheeks of the virtuous humbled
Before him, while the feet of wrongdoers are kissed.
عَجِبتُI marveled لَهُat him يَجنيhe does wrong وَيُصبِحُand becomes عاتِباًreproachful
فَواso, oh حَرَباًwoe مِنfrom ظالِمٍan oppressor يَتَظَلَّمُcomplains of being wronged
I marvel at him: he does wrong, yet turns reproachful.
Oh, what torment from an oppressor who complains of being wronged!
وَأَعجَبُand more astonishing مِنthan ذاthis أَنَّهُthat he وَهوَwhile he is ظالِميmy oppressor
غَداhe became لِيَto me خَصماًan adversary وَهوَwhile he فيin الفَصلِadjudication يَحكُمُpasses judgment
And stranger still is that he, my oppressor,
Has become my adversary, yet also judges the dispute.
فَياso, O عاتِباًreproacher فيfor سَكبِshedding دَمعٍtears أَذالَهُhe let them flow
فَأَمسىso it became بِأَسرارِof the secrets الهَوىof love يَتَكَلَّمُspeaking
So, O you who reproach me for shedding tears he let flow,
They have thus come to speak the secrets of love.
أَسَرتَyou took captive فُؤاديmy heart ثُمَّthen أَطلَقتَyou set free أَدمُعيmy tears
وَحاوَلتُand I tried أَنّيthat I لِلصَبابَةِfor ardent longing أَكتُمُI conceal
You took my heart captive, then set my tears free,
And I tried to keep my ardent longing hidden.
وَمَنand whoever قَلبُهُhis heart مَعَwith غَيرِهِsomeone other than himself كَيفَhow حالُهُhis condition
وَمَنand whoever سِرُّهُhis secret فيin جَفنِهِhis eyelid كَيفَhow يُكتَمُis concealed
And one whose heart is with another—how does he fare?
And one whose secret is in his eyelid—how can it be concealed?
