وَغَيرُكَand anyone but you فيin القَلبِthe heart لَمnot يَحلُلِdwell
Nothing but the beauty of your face has been sweet to me,
None but the beauty of your face is lawful for me,
and none but you has dwelt in my heart.
Nor is there in my heart a place for another.
فَكَيفَso how سَلوّيmy forgetting وَليand I have طينَةٌclay
عَلىupon غَيرِanything other than حُبِّكَlove of you لَمnot تُجبَلِbe molded
How can I forget, when my clay
How then to console myself when I was created
was molded for nothing but love of you?
Of clay that solidifies not but by your love?
أَتَزعُمُdo you suppose أَنّيthat I أُطيعُobey الوُشاةَthe talebearers
وَأَصغيand I listen إِلىto عَذَلِthe reproaches of العُذَّلِthe reproachers
Do you suppose that I obey the talebearers
Do you suppose I would obey the slanderers
and listen to the reproaches of the reproachers?
Or listen to the censure of the censurers?
لَقَدindeed نَصَلَstripped away الدَهرُtime صَبغَthe dye of الشَبابِyouth
وَصَبغُand the dye of المَحَبَّةِlove لَمnot يَنصُلِfade
Time has indeed stripped away youth's dye,
Time has dyed youth and dyed too
but love's dye has not faded.
The dye of love that does not fade.
عَجِبتُI marveled لِقَدِّكَat your stature مَعwith لينِهِits suppleness
يُريناit shows us اِعتِدالاًuprightness وَلَمand not يَعدِلِact justly
I marvel at your stature, for all its suppleness:
I wonder at your softness despite your potency
it shows us uprightness, yet has never acted justly.
Showing temperance, though not tempered.
يَلينُit is supple وَفيand in فَتكِهِits slaying قَسوَةٌcruelty
وَذَلِكَand that شَأنُthe nature of القَناthe spears الذُبَّلِslender
It is supple, yet there is cruelty in its slaying,
It is soft, yet in its deadliness potent
and such is the nature of slender spears.
Such is the nature of the supple bow.
وَعَيناكَand your eyes قَدindeed فَوَّقَتnocked أَسهُماًarrows
فَمَنso who دَلَّهُنَّguided them عَلىto مَقتَليmy vital spot
And your eyes have nocked arrows;
Your eyes unleashed arrows to my doom,
who, then, showed them my vital spot?
So who guided them to my death?
وَخَدُّكَand your cheek موقَدَةٌkindled نارُهُits fire
وَقَلبيand my heart بِجُذوَتِهاat its ember يَصطَليwarms itself
And your cheek—its fire is kindled,
Your cheek is an ignition, its flames
and my heart warms itself at its ember.
Setting my heart aflame.
أَياO ماdelayer (first fragment) طِلاًdelayer (second fragment) لِوُعودِof the promises of الوِصالِunion
وَوَعدُand the promise of تَجافيهِhis estrangement لَمnot يَمطُلِbe delayed
O you who delay the promises of union,
Oh night of promised union, prolonged,
while the promise of his estrangement has never been delayed.
The promise of your separation unfailing.
بَخِلتَyou were miserly وَقَدand indeed حُزتَyou gained مُلكَthe kingdom of الجَمالِbeauty
وَمَنand whoever مَلَكَpossessed المُلكَthe kingdom لَمnot يَبخَلِbe miserly
You have been miserly, though you gained beauty's kingdom,
You refused though you owned all beauty.
and whoever possesses a kingdom is not miserly.
And how can one who owns refuse?
فَهلاًso why not تَعَلَّمتَyou learned فَضلَthe virtue of السَماحِgenerosity
مِنfrom راحَةِthe palm of المَلِكِthe king الأَفضَلِal-Afdal
Why, then, have you not learned the virtue of generosity
Had you learned generosity
from the palm of King al-Afdal?
From the disposition of the noblest king:
مَليكٌa king إِذاwhen هَطَلَتpours down كَفُّهُhis palm
تَصاغَرَdwindles قَدرُthe worth of الحَياthe rain المُسبِلِpouring down
A king whose palm, when it pours,
A king whose palm rains bounty
makes the worth of pouring rain seem small.
Belittling the gifts of the stretching hand.
يَشيدُhe builds العُلىhigh glory بِاليَراعِwith the reed-pen القَصيرِshort
وَيَفخَرُand he takes pride بِالطَرَفِin the spear-point الأَطوَلِlonger
He builds high glory with the short reed-pen,
He boasts of the short spear above power.
and takes pride in the longer spear-point.
Taking pride in the longer eyelash.
تَلاقيهِyou meet him فيin الحَربِwar صَعبَdifficult in المِراسِcombat
وَفيand in السِلمِpeace ذاpossessed of الخُلُقِthe temperament الأَسهَلِmost easygoing
You find him in war hard to contend with,
Meeting him at warring is hard,
and in peace, of the gentlest temper.
While in peace he is of easiest nature.
أَخَفُّswifter إِلىtoward الحَربِwar مِنthan ذابِلٍa slender spear
وَأَثقَلُand weightier فيin الحِلمِforbearance مِنthan يَذبُلِYadhbul
Swifter to war than a slender spear,
Lighter in going to war than a fading leaf,
and weightier in forbearance than Mount Yadhbul.
And weightier in clemency than the wilting.
يُضيءُhe gives light لَناfor us فيin ظَلامِthe darkness of الخُطوبِcalamities
وَيُشرِقُand he shines فيin حِندِسِthe blackness of القَسطَلِbattle-dust
He gives us light in the darkness of calamities,
In darkness of afflictions he gives light
and shines in the blackness of battle-dust.
Rising in the night of shackles.
فَسَيلُso the torrent of عَطاياهُhis gifts لِلمُجتَديfor the seeker of bounty
وَنورُand the light of مُحَيّاهُhis face لِلمُجتَليfor the beholder
So the torrent of his gifts is for the seeker of bounty,
To the bold his bounty is a torrent
and the light of his face is for the beholder.
And the light of his smile to the wretched.
يُرَمِّلُhe stains بِالدَمِwith blood شِلوَthe corpse of الكَمِيِّthe armored warrior

وَيَحنوand he shows tenderness عَلىtoward البائِسِthe wretched المُرمِلِpenniless
He stains the armored warrior's corpse with blood,
He honors the blood-stained garment
and shows compassion to the wretched pauper.
And feels for the naked pauper.

Virtues whose goodness is ancestral,
Known merits continued through offspring.
which Muhammad received as a legacy from Ali.
Mohammed inherited them from Ali.

فيin كُلِّevery ماضٍpast age وَمُستَقبَلِand future age

Glory is ascribed to the house of Ayyub
To the Ayyubid household belong victories
in every past and future age.
In every past and every future.

Kings whose later honor
Kings of second glory
speaks of their earlier honor.
Told from first glories.

Their generosity reveals them, just as
Their munificence grows as grows
the winds reveal aloeswood.
Wind upon the pendulum.
أَياO ناصِرَNasir (champion of) الدينِthe faith ياO اِبنَson of الَّذيthe one who
بِهِthrough him أَصبَحَcame to be المُلكُkingship فيin مَعقِلِa stronghold
O Nasir al-Din, O son of the one
Oh aide of the faith, son of him who
through whom kingship came to rest in a stronghold,
With it the rule gained footing:
حَباكَgranted you المُؤَيَّدُal-Mu'ayyad تَأيِيدَهُhis support
كَذاthus هِمَّةُthe resolve of اللَيثِthe lion فيin الأَشبُلِthe cubs
al-Mu'ayyad granted you his support;
Al-Muʿtaḍid favored you with his support
thus the lion's high resolve lives in its cubs.
As the lion’s spirit in the cub.
وَلَولاand were it not for وَجودُكَyour existence كانَwould be السَماحُgenerosity
تَحتَbeneath الصَفائِحِthe stone slabs وَالجَندَلِand the rocks
And were it not for your existence, generosity would lie
And were it not for your existence
beneath stone slabs and rocks.
Munificence would be beneath the shrouds.
فَعَلتَyou did مِنَof الجودِgenerosity ماwhat لَمnot تَقُلyou said
وَغيرُكَand others besides you قالَsaid وَلَمand not يَفعَلِact
You did in generosity what you had never promised,
You accomplished through gifting what none stated
while others promised and did not act.
While others stated but did not accomplish.
فَقَلبيso my heart بِإِحسانِكُمthrough your kindness فارِغٌfree of care
وَكَفّيand my palm بِإِنعامِكُمthrough your favors مُمتَليfull
So through your kindness my heart is free of care,
So my heart is free of your benefaction
and through your favors my palm is full.
And my palm filled with your boons.
سَمَحتَyou gave generously اِبتِداءًunprompted وَلَمand not أَمتَدِحI offered praise
وَأَنعَمتَand you bestowed favors عَفواًfreely وَلَمand not أَسأَلِI asked
You gave unprompted, though I had offered no praise,
You gifted ere I praised
and bestowed favors freely, though I had not asked.
And favoured without my asking.
وَوالَيتَand you continued بِرَّكَyour kindness حَتّىuntil رَحَلتُI departed
حَياءًout of modesty وَلَولاهُand but for it لَمnot أَرحَلِI would depart
And you continued your kindness until I departed
Your righteousness persisted until I departed
out of modesty; but for it, I would not have departed.
Out of propriety, else I would not have.
وَلَوand if شِئتُI wished نَهضيmy setting out إِلىtoward قَصدِكُمvisiting you
لَخَفَّفتُI would have lightened عَنfrom ظَهرِيَmy back المُثقَلِburdened
And had I wished to set out to visit you,
Had I wanted to journey to you
I would have eased the load on my burdened back.
I would have eased my heavy load.
فَأَهمَلتُso I neglected واجِبَthe duty of سَعييmy journey إِلَيكَto you
وَماand not كُنتُI was عِندَكَwith you بِالمُهمَلِone neglected
So I neglected my duty to journey to you,
But I neglected the effort towards you
though you had never neglected me.
When I was never neglected by you.
وَكَفَّرتُand I atoned عَنfor زَلَّةِthe fault of الإِنقِطاعِstaying away
بِأَحسَنِwith the finest of مَنthose who كانَwere فيin مَنزِليmy household
And I atoned for the fault of staying away
And I made up for the lapse in correspondence
with the finest of those in my household.
With the best I had in my abode.
فَأَرسَلتُهُso I sent him راجِياًhoping أَنَّهُthat he
يُمَحِّصُcleanses عَنof زَلَّةِthe fault of المُرسِلِthe sender
So I sent him, hoping that he
So I sent him hopeful
would wipe away the sender's fault.
He'd clarify the fault of the sender.
فَإِنso if لاحَظَتهُregard him عُيونُthe eyes of الرِضىfavor
لَكَyours is الفَضلُthe credit فيin ذاكَthat وَالفَخرُand the pride ليmine
So if the eyes of favor look upon him,
If his qualities attracted pleased attention
the credit for that is yours, and the pride is mine.
Yours would be the merit and mine the pride.
وَإِنand if لَمnot يَكُنhe is غايَةًthe pinnacle فيin الجَمالِbeauty
وَبَدرُand the full moon of مَعانيهِhis qualities لَمnot يَكمَلِgrow complete
And though he may not be the pinnacle of beauty,
If he was not most fair
and the full moon of his qualities is not yet complete,
Nor his words full-orbed:
فَإِنَّso indeed لَهُhe has غايَةًthe utmost فيin الذَكاءِintelligence
وَلُطفَand finesse of البَديهَةِready wit وَالمِقوَلِand speech
he does possess the utmost intelligence,
He has the height of wit
and finesse in ready wit and speech.
And subtlety of instinct and speech---
وَبِكرٍand a maiden ode خَدَمتُI served بِهاwith it عاجِلاًin haste
وَسيفُand the sword of القَريحَةُpoetic inspiration لَمnot يُصقَلِbe polished
And I served you in haste with a maiden ode,
A virgin service I hastened with
while the sword of poetic inspiration was still unpolished.
Ere the sword of talent were drawn.
أَرومُI seek إِقامَةَestablishing عُذريmy excuse بِهاthrough it
وَأُثنيand I extol عَلىupon فَضلِكَyour excellence الأَكمَلِconsummate
I seek to establish my excuse through it,
I aim through it to plead excuse
and extol your consummate excellence.
And praise your greatest merit.
وَمِثلُكَand one such as you مَنone who قَبِلَaccepts الإِعتِذارَan apology
وَصَدَّقَand believes قَولَthe word of المُحِبُّthe loving one الوَليthe loyal friend
And one such as you accepts an apology,
And one like you accepts apology
and believes the word of a loving, loyal friend.
And believes his lover's words.
فَواthen alas for ضُعفَthe weakness of حَظّيmy fortune وَفَوتَand the loss of المُنىhopes
إِذاif كانَshould be عُذرِيَmy excuse لَمnot يُقبَلِbe accepted
Then alas for my poor fortune and the loss of my hopes,
So pity my ill-fate and loss of wishes!
if my excuse is not accepted!
Were my excuse to be refused.
