وَماand not زادَنيincreased in me قُربُnearness الدِيارِthe dwellings تَلَهُّفاًyearning
عَلَيكُمfor you all لِأَنَّbecause التُربَthe dust شَرٌّworse مِنَthan البُعدِdistance
The nearness of the dwellings heightened my yearning
for you—not because dust is worse than distance,
وَلَكِنand yet إِذاwhen الظَمآنُthe thirsty man شاهَدَsaw مَنهَلاًa watering place
عَلىdespite قُربِهِits nearness زادَincreased الحَنينُthe longing إِلىfor الوِردِdrinking
but because, when a thirsty man sees a watering place,
near though it is, his longing to drink grows.
