Are these stars of a garden, or stars of the sky?

Their rays have dispelled the gloom of darkness.

They shone in the robes of darkness, and staring

At them in envy were the stars of Orion.

Each of them slender in her curves, fashioned

In stature like that of a brown spear:

A body like rock in the hardness of its substance,

And her eyelids, in tears, are like al-Khansa's.

Her tears flow, and her face laughs,

So she remains between smiling and weeping.

She weeps for her exile, and smiles because she is

In the Sultan's presence every evening—

    Al-Salih, the king whose domains

Are a cave of refuge for delegations and the Kaaba of the poor.

A king through whose just and generous conduct

The glories of the caliphs' rule have been eclipsed.

May he never cease ascending on the horizon of happiness,

Above the Milky Way in radiance and glory.
