Are these pearls that shone upon throats,

Or stars that shone in the nights,

Or passages from the thoughts of a lord

Of lofty standing and eloquent speech?

How many a house of meanings they have built through thought,

And turned, through remembrance, into a house of glories.

The breath of light, slender pens—

How many heavy calamities they have wiped out!

And short in the palms, yet

They have made the work of long spears fall short.

They make sleep forbidden to us

Whenever they come with lawful magic.

They bound me with kindness, yet

They freed my speech in gratitude for it.

You have made me safe, yet for it I am

Fearful of the harm of the evil eye upon perfection.

So pardon, my lord, a lover turned aside

    From praising you by a troubled mind;

One burdened with cares, his heart preoccupied,

And the blaze of his sorrows aflame.
