وَمُذand when أَطفَأَextinguished الشَمعَthe candles النَسيمُthe breeze بِمَجلِسٍat a gathering
وَمُذ أَطفَأَ الشَمعَ النَسيمُ بِمَجلِسٍ
بِهِin it نورُthe light of شَمسِShams (sun) الدينِal-Din (the faith) كَالشَمسِlike the sun ساطِعُshining
بِهِ نورُ شَمسِ الدينِ كَالشَمسِ ساطِعُ
And when the breeze put out the candles at a gathering
Since the breeze extinguished the candle in a gathering
where the light of Shams al-Din shone like the sun,
Where the light of the sun of religion shone like the sun
عَذَرناwe excused وَقُلناand we said ماnot أَتىit came بِبَديعَةٍwith anything extraordinary
عَذَرنا وَقُلنا ما أَتى بِبَديعَةٍ
لِأَنَّbecause اِشتِعالَthe burning of الشَمعِthe candles فيin الشَمسِthe sun ضائِعُwasted
لِأَنَّ اِشتِعالَ الشَمعِ في الشَمسِ ضائِعُ
we excused it and said, “It has done nothing extraordinary,
We apologized and said he did not produce a wonder
for the burning of candles is wasted in the sun.”
For the candle's flame in the sun would be lost
