And one with wide jaws and a firmly knit back,

With sharp fangs, feared for its onslaught,

    Flat-nosed, golden of hide, spotted,

Like gold in hue, dotted with ink.

The Creator clothed it in surpassing beauty,

And traced streaks upon both its cheeks.

Heavy of body, yet light when it steps,

Proven in daring, sure-footed in its stride,

When loosed, it outstrips the dusky sandgrouse.

It became master over its quarry.

Until, when it sprang free of its tether,

It fulfilled for us in deed what it had pledged.

I said, as I passed the night delighted with it,

And the carcass of its quarry lay freshly slain:

“Is it with that one, or with horses, that you race at full gallop?”
