وَيَومِand on a day دَجنٍcloudiness مُعلَمِpatterned البُردَينِthe two cloaks
سَماؤُهُits sky بِالغَيمِwith clouds فيin لَونَينِtwo colors
And on a cloudy day, its two cloaks patterned,
its sky showed two colors with the clouds,
كَأَنَّهاas though it وَقَدand already بَدَتappeared لِلعَينِto the eye
فَيروزَجٌturquoise يَلمَعُgleams فيin لَونَينِtwo colors
as though, when it appeared to the eye,
it were turquoise gleaming in two colors.
قَضَيتُI paid فيهِduring it بِالسُرورِwith joy دَينيmy debt
وَسِرتُand I traveled أَفليI comb مَفرِقَthe fork of الشَعبَينِthe two ravines
That day I paid my debt with joy,
and rode, combing the fork of the two ravines,
بِأَدهَمٍon a black horse مُحَجَّلِwhite-marked الرِجلَينِboth hind legs
سَبطِsmooth الأَديمِthe skin مُفلَقِunmarked (if مُطلَق is intended) اليَدَينِboth forelegs
on a black horse, both hind legs white-marked,
smooth-skinned, both forelegs unmarked [uncertain reading],
خَصبَfleshy العَطاةِthe croup (if القَطاة is intended) ماحِلِlean الرُسغَينِboth fetlocks
وَسَربِand a herd of وَحشٍwild beasts مُذwhen بَداappeared لِعَينيto my eye
full in the croup [uncertain reading], lean at both fetlocks.
And when a herd of wild beasts came into my view,
عارَضتُهُI intercepted it فيat مُنتَهىthe end of السَفحَينِthe two slopes
بِأَرقَطٍwith a spotted beast مُخَطَّطِstriped الأُذنَينِboth ears
I intercepted it at the end of the two slopes,
with a spotted beast, both ears striped,
ناقيclear الجَبينِthe brow أَهرَتِwide-gaping الشِدقَينِboth mouth-corners
أَفطَسَflat-nosed سَبطِstraight الشَعرِthe hair صافِclear العَينِthe eye
clear-browed, wide at both corners of the mouth,
flat-nosed, straight-haired, clear-eyed,
يَنظُرُit gazes فيin اللَيلِthe night بِجَمرَتَينِwith two glowing coals
ذيwith كَحَلٍkohl سالَflowed مِنَfrom العَينَينِboth eyes
gazing at night with two glowing coals,
with kohl that flowed from its two eyes
فَخَطَّand so it drew لامَينِtwo lām letters عَلىupon الخَدَّينِboth cheeks
مُحَدَّدِsharp النابَينِboth fangs وَالظَفرَينِand both claws
and drew two lām letters upon its two cheeks;
sharp in both fangs and both claws,
كَأَنَّماas though يَكشِرُit bares its teeth عَنrevealing نَصلَينِtwo blades
لَيسَthere is not لَهُfor it عَهدٌacquaintance بِضَربِwith the blows of قَينِa smith
as though it bares two blades
that have never known a smith's blows;
رَقيقِthin لَحمِthe flesh of الزَندِthe forearm وَالساقَينِand both shanks
ذيwith ذَنَبٍa tail أَملَسَsmooth غَيرِwithout شَينِblemish
lean of flesh at the forearm and both shanks,
with a smooth tail, free of blemish.
فَخاتَلَthen it stalked السَربَthe herd بِخُطوَتَينِwith two steps
وَأَردَفَand it followed up الخَطوَthe stepping بِوَثبَتَينِwith two leaps
Then it stalked the herd with two steps,
and followed those steps with two leaps.
فَكانَso it was فيهاamong them كَغُرابِlike the raven of البَينِparting
فَرَّقَهاit scattered them قَبلَbefore بُلوغِthe arrival of الحَينِdeath
So among them it was like the raven of parting:
it scattered them before the hour of death,
وَنالَand it caught مِنهاfrom them عَفَرَdust-colored المَتنَينِboth loins
أَجيَدَlong-necked مَصقولِpolished الإِهابِthe hide زَينِhandsome
and caught one of them, dust-colored on both loins,
long-necked, polished of hide, handsome.
جَدَّلَهُit felled it فيat مُلتَقىthe meeting-place of الصَفينِthe two ranks
وَلَمand did not يَحُلhinder ماwhat بَينَهُbetween it وَبَينيand between me
It felled the quarry where the two ranks met,
and what lay between it and me was no hindrance.
نِلتُI gained بِمُهريthrough my colt وَبِهِand through it كَفلَينِtwo shares
إِنَّهماindeed, they both لِلصَيدِfor hunting عُدَّتَينِtwo aids
Through my colt and through it I gained two shares;
indeed, they are two aids for the hunt.

Sport is no pleasure without these two.
