وَجِنحُand a stretch of night دُجُنَّةٍof deep darkness فيهِin it اِغتَبَقناwe took our evening draught
وَواصَلناand we continued الصَبوحَthe morning draught بِيَومِon a day دَجنِof cloudiness
And in a dark stretch of night we took our evening draught,
In the wings of a gentle night we embraced,
And continued with the morning draught on an overcast day.
And greeted the dawn on a day of delight,
وَقَدand indeed نَشَرَspread الرَبيعُspring مُروطَmantles رَوضٍof a meadow
عَلىover الشِعبَينِthe two ravines مِنof سَهلٍlevel ground وَحَزنِand rugged ground
And spring had spread a meadow's mantles
When spring had arrayed, in a flower-strewn field,
Over the two ravines, across level and rugged ground.
The valleys and hills in a garment bright.
فَأَغصانٌso branches مِنَby النَسَماتِthe breezes تُثنىare bent
وَأَزهارٌand flowers عَلىto الأَنواءِthe seasonal rains تَثنيoffer praise
So branches are bent by the breezes,
The branches, caressed by the zephyrs slight,
And flowers offer praise to the seasonal rains.
Bend over with blossoms that shine and nod,
يُضاحِكُهاsmiles at them الغَمامُthe clouds بِثَغرِwith a mouth بَرقٍof lightning
وَتَبكيهاand weeps for them الغَمامُthe clouds بِدَمعِwith tears مُزنِof rainclouds
The clouds smile at them with a mouth of lightning,
While clouds smile at them with lightning bright,
And the clouds weep for them with rainclouds' tears.
And weep on their petals in tears of god.
فَطَوراًso at times ضاحِكاًlaughing مِنfrom غَيرِother than بِشرٍgladness
وَطَوراًand at times باكِياًweeping مِنfrom غَيرِother than حُزنِsorrow
So at times laughing without gladness,
At times they laugh, though no joy they know,
And at times weeping without sorrow.
At times they weep, though they feel no woe.
