وَقَهوَةٍand a wine يُجتَلىis revealed السُرورُjoy بِهاthrough it
وَتَنجَليand are dispelled بِاِنجِلائِهاat its unveiling الكُرَبُsorrows
And a wine through which joy is revealed,
With coffee joy and cheer abound
and sorrows vanish at its unveiling.
Its splendor makes all grief recede
جَلَوتُهاI unveiled it وَالخُطوبُand misfortunes غافِلَةٌheedless
وَقَدand already تَجَلَّتshone forth فيin أُفقِهاits horizon الشُهُبُbright stars
I unveiled it while misfortunes were heedless,
Heedless of fate, it can be found
and bright stars had shone on its horizon.
To kindle hope when woes stampede
وَبِتُّand I spent the night أُغريI entice بِهاwith it أَخاa man of صَلَفٍconceit

And I spent the night enticing with it a man of conceit,
I coaxed a dour friend to try a sip
whom lessons and books had dried out.
Whose temper books had dried up stiff
باتَhe spent the night بِرُغميagainst my will ضَيفاًas a guest لَدَيَّwith me ولاand not

يَعلَمُhe knows أَنّيthat I بِمِثلِهِof someone like him تَعِبُweary
He stayed the night as my guest against my will, and did not
He was my guest but little knew
know that I was weary of the likes of him.
I likewise found life harsh and tough
فَقالَso he said ليto me مُغضَباًangrily لِيُرشِدَنيto guide me
مِثلُكَsomeone like you لاnot يَستَخِفَّهُcarries him away الطَرَبُrapture
So he said to me angrily, to set me right:
Reproving me, he sought to teach
"Someone like you is not carried away by rapture."
"Fickle friends calamity can breach"
فَقُلتُso I said هَلّاwhy not رَأَيتَyou saw صَيغَتَهاits form
كَأَنَّهاas though it فيin الزُجاجِthe glass تَلتَهِبُblazes
So I said, "Why not look at its form?
I said "Behold its shapely glass
It seems to blaze within the glass.
As if therein flames clashed and meshed
وَطَعمُهاand its taste لَوif عَرَفتَyou knew لَذَّتَهُits delight

And its taste—if you knew its delight,
And taste it! Joy would come to pass
dignity and decorum would leave you.
If you this manners breach freshened"
نُطفَةُa drop كَرمٍgrapevine فُوَيقَهاjust above it حَبَبٌbubbles

A drop from the vine, with bubbles just above it,
The fruit of vines by honey graced
as though they were sweet saliva and the cool sheen of teeth."
As buds and bunches interlaced
فَاِزدادَso he grew يُبساًin dryness وَقامَand stood up مُمتَعِضاًresentful
وَلاحَand appeared فيهِin him النَفارُaversion وَالغَضبُand anger
So he grew drier still and stood up resentfully,
More arid still, he rose, disgusted
and aversion and anger showed in him.
Scowling and to anger rustled
وَقالَand he said لاnever ذُقتُهاI tasted it فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him

And he said, "May I never taste it!" So I told him:
"Not a sip will I take" he maintained
"From dryness like this, scabies arises."
I said "It's your aridity such drought has sustained"
