وَيَومٍ ضَمَّ شَملَ الصَحبِ فيهِ

وَيَومٍ ضَمَّ شَملَ الصَحبِ فيهِ

مُلِثٌّ في تَرادُفِهِ مُلِحُّ

مُلِثٌّ في تَرادُفِهِ مُلِحُّ

And a day on which the friends were brought together

A day when companionship was restored

By unceasing rain, relentless in its succession.

Witty in its rhyming, compelling in its flow

تَكاثَفَ غَيمُهُ فَالصُبحُ لَيلٌ

تَكاثَفَ غَيمُهُ فَالصُبحُ لَيلٌ

وَأَومَضَ بَرقُهُ فَاللَيلُ صُبحُ

وَأَومَضَ بَرقُهُ فَاللَيلُ صُبحُ

Its clouds thickened, so morning was night;

Its clouds gathered dense, so dawn was night

And its lightning flashed, so night was morning.

Its lightning flashed, making night seem like morn

وَعاهَدنا العِهادَ بِهِ عُهوداً

وَعاهَدنا العِهادَ بِهِ عُهوداً

فَما لِجُفونِها بِالسَحِّ شَحُّ

فَما لِجُفونِها بِالسَحِّ شَحُّ

And on that day we made covenants with the recurring rains;

We pledged with sleep many a vow

So their eyelids showed no stinginess in pouring.

Yet our eyes were not miserly with slumber

فَقَد حَلَفَت لَنا أَن لَيسَ تَصحو

فَقَد حَلَفَت لَنا أَن لَيسَ تَصحو

وَأَقسَمنا لَها أَن لَيسَ نَصحو

وَأَقسَمنا لَها أَن لَيسَ نَصحو

For they had sworn to us they would not clear,

It swore to us it would not wake

And we swore to them we would not sober up.

And we swore we would not stir or rouse
