وَأَطيَبُand the sweetest أَوقاتيmy moments مِنَin الدَهرِlife خَلوَةٌsolitude
يَقَرَّfinds peace بِهاin it قَلبيmy heart وَيَصفواand grows clear بِهاin it ذِهنيmy mind
And the sweetest of my moments in life is solitude,
In which my heart finds peace and my mind grows clear.
وَتَأخُذُنيand seizes me مِنfrom سَورَةِthe surge الفِكرِof thought نَشوَةٌrapture
فَأَخرُجُso I leave مِنfrom فَنٍّa field of learning وَأَدخُلُand I enter فيinto فَنِّa field of learning
And a rapture seizes me from the surge of thought,
So I leave one field of learning and enter another.
وَيَفهَمُand understands ماwhat قَدalready قالَsaid عَقليmy intellect تَصَوُّريmy imagination
فَنَقليso my recounting إِذاthen عَنّيfrom myself وَسَمعيand my hearing بِهاin it مِنّيfrom myself
And my imagination understands what my intellect has said;
Thus what I recount comes from myself, and in solitude I hear myself.
وَأَسمَعُand I hear مِنfrom نَجوىthe whispered talk الدَفاتِرِof the books طُرفَةٌan amusing tale
أُزيلُI dispel بِهاwith it هَمّيmy worry وَأَجلوand I clear away بِهاwith it حُزنيmy sorrow
And from the books’ whispered talk I hear an amusing tale,
With which I dispel my worry and clear away my sorrow.
يُنادِمُنيkeeps me company قَومٌpeople لَدَيَّwith me حَديثُهُمtheir conversation
فَماso nothing غابَwas absent مِنهُمُof them غَيرُexcept شَخصِهِمtheir bodily presence عَنّيfrom me
People whose words are with me keep me company,
So nothing of them is absent from me but their bodily presence.
