The veil resented her excessive concealment,

And deemed her safekeeping hoarding, so took her captive.

A wine—if men were told, 'Bow down to the sun,'

And she appeared, they would owe her homage, mistaking her for it.

The mixing water drew its sword against her

When she unsheathed her blades against the night.

The mixing water rejected her when she was mixed,

Yet when she traced her lineage, it was her father.

So we saw the night as morning when

She emerged, unveiled before us, from her tent.

Her lights rent the veil of darkness

With broad blades whose radiance tore through the night.

She faced us, and we prostrated ourselves in awe

Before her countenance, and pressed our foreheads into the dust,

    In gardens whose breaths perfumed

Every horizon when their east wind blew.

The companions clothed them in the brocade of herbage—

Robes, ever since the torrent reached their hills.

So we fulfilled the soul's desire with her,

In the serenity of a life with which Time had favored it.
