ياO عَلَماًbanner لاحَshone لَخَفضِto bring low العِدىthe foes
وَهوَand it is لِرَفعِto exalt الذِكرِrenown مَنصوبُraised
O illustrious banner, risen to humble the foe,
O banner that shone to bring the foes low,
standing erect to raise renown.
and is raised to exalt renown.
عَبدُكَyour servant قَدindeed جاءَكَcame to you مُستَصرِخاًcrying for help
وَقَلبُهُand his heart بِالهَمِّwith sorrow مَكروبُdistressed
Your servant has come to you, crying out for rescue,
Your servant has come to you crying for help,
his heart anguished with care.
and his heart is burdened with sorrow.
حاfar be it (fragment) شاكَfrom you (fragment) أَنthat تُنصِفَyou grant justice مَنsomeone دونَهbeneath him
وَحَقُّهُand his right عِندَكَin your presence مَغصوبُusurped
Far be it from you to grant justice to another before him,
Far be it from you to grant justice to one beneath him,
while his own right, in your keeping, is usurped.
while his own right is usurped in your presence.
فَكُلُّso all ماthat which يَغرِسُplants وَحشُthe wild beasts of الفَلاthe wilderness
مُتَّهَمٌaccused فيof فِعلِهِdoing it الذَيبُthe wolf
For whatever a beast of the wilderness sinks its fangs into,
So whatever the beasts of the wilderness plant,
the wolf stands accused of the deed.
the wolf is accused of doing it.
الذِئبُthe wolf لاnot يُؤمِنُis trusted (contextual reading) لَكِنَّهُbut he
عَليهِagainst him فيconcerning يوسُفَJoseph مَكذوبُfalsely alleged
The wolf is not to be trusted; yet
The wolf cannot be trusted, yet
in Joseph’s case, it was falsely accused.
lies were told against him concerning Joseph.
وَقَدand indeed تَجَلّىbecame clear الحَقَّthe truth مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat
صَدَّقَbelieved فيهِabout him السَعيَthe slander يَعقوبُJacob
And the truth came to light after
And the truth became clear after
Jacob pressed the quest for him in earnest.
Jacob had believed the slander about him.
كَذَلِكَlikewise العَبدُthe servant الَّذيwhose حَقُّهُhis right
بِباطِلِby the falsehood of الأَعداءِthe enemies مَغلوبُoverpowered
So too the servant whose right
So too is the servant whose right
is overborne by the falsehood of his enemies.
is suppressed by the enemies' falsehood.
رَأوكَthey saw you لِلسَعيِto the slander بِهِagainst him سامِعاًlistening
فَلُفِّقَتso were fabricated عَنهُabout him الأَكاذيبُthe lies
They saw you receptive to efforts on his behalf,
They saw you listening to slander against him,
so lies were fabricated against him.
so lies about him were fabricated.
