لاnot يوخَذُis held accountable الجارُthe neighbor فيin الأَعراضِmatters of honor بِالجارِfor the neighbor
إِنif دامَhe continues وَهوَwhile he is عَلىon رِسلِthe gentle course of الوَفاfidelity جاريproceeding
A neighbor is not held accountable for another neighbor in matters of honor,
The neighbor should not be blamed for the faults of another neighbor,
if he continues, following fidelity’s gentle course.
If he remains and continues the course of loyalty.
عَلىhigh standing (reading عُلى) ذَويthose possessing الوِدِّaffection بِالحُسنىthrough goodness بِأَنفُسِهِمin themselves
وَماand not عَليهِمupon them بِفِعلِthrough the deed of الغَيرِanother مِنany عارِdisgrace
The standing of those who cherish affection comes from their own goodness,
Those with affection should be treated with kindness for their own sake,
and no disgrace falls on them for another’s deed.
And not held accountable for the deeds of others that bring shame.
فَكَيفَso how أَلحَقتُمُdid you attribute فِعلَthe deed of العُداةِthe enemies بِناto us
لِقُربِbecause of the nearness of دارِهِمُtheir dwelling بِالرُغمِagainst one’s will مِنto داريmy dwelling
How, then, did you attribute the enemies’ deed to us,
How then have you associated the acts of aggressors with us,
because their dwelling, against my will, lies near mine?
Merely for the nearness of their homes to my home?
وَلِمand why عَذَقتُمdid you ascribe بِناto us ماwhat قالَsaid ضِدُّكُمُyour adversary
عَنكُمabout you وَإِنeven if قُلتُهُI said it مِنfrom غَيرِother than إيثاريmy choosing
And why did you ascribe to us what your adversary said
And why have you blamed us for what your enemies have said against you,
about you—even if I uttered it, not of my own choosing?
When I said it not, nor intended any harm?
كَماjust as سَمِعتَyou heard بِصَوتِof the sound of النارِthe fire فيin حَطَبٍfirewood
وَالصَوتُand the sound لِلريحِof the wind لَيسَis not الصَوتُthe sound لِلنارِof the fire
Just as you heard the sound of fire in firewood,
Just as you hear the sound of fire in burning wood,
yet the sound belongs to the wind, not to the fire.
Yet the sound belongs to the wind, not to the fire.
