وَأَغيَدٍand a graceful youth مُكتَمِلٍcomplete حُسنُهُhis beauty
لَيسَthere is not لَهُfor him فيamong الناسِpeople مِنany مُشبِهِa counterpart
And a graceful youth, his beauty complete—
And a graceful youth whose beauty was complete
among all people, none resembled him.
had no equal among people.
أَسقَطَهُcast him down العارِضُthe cheek-beard مِنfrom رُتبَةٍa station
مُخبَرَةٍreported بِالقُربِas being near مِنto رَبِّهِhis Lord
The side-whisker cast him down from a rank
His cheek-beard cast him down from a station
that proclaimed his nearness to his Lord.
said to be near his Lord.
فَقُلتُso I said إِذwhen سالَflowed لَهُfor him عارِضٌa cheek-beard
فَأَعرَضَthen turned away العُشّاقُthe lovers عَنfrom حُبِّهِlove for him
So I said, when a side-whisker trailed down his cheek
So I said, when a beard flowed down his cheek
and the lovers turned away from loving him:
and the lovers turned away from loving him:
لَوif فَكَّرَpondered العاشِقُthe lover فيon مُنتَهىthe end
حُسنِthe beauty الَّذيthe one who يَسبيهِcaptivates him لَمwould not يَسبِهِcaptivate him
Had the lover reflected on the final end
If the lover pondered the end
of the beauty of the one who takes him captive, that one would not take him captive.
of his captor’s beauty, that captor would not captivate him.
