لَوif أَنَّthat أَيسَرَهاthe slightest of them بِالوُرقِupon the gray doves ماnot صَدَحَتthey sang
I sing your praise in love, while trials beset me;
Had the gray doves borne the least of them, they would not have sung.
ماnot إِنat all (emphasis) أَفوهُI utter بِشَرحٍwith an explanation فيin المَقالِspeech لَهاof them
لَكِنَّهاbut they بِلِسانِin the language of الحالِcircumstance قَدalready شَرَحَتexplained themselves
I utter no explanation of them in my speech,
Yet they have explained themselves in the language of circumstance.
لاnot أَذمُمُI blame الدَهرَTime فيfor أَمرٍa matter رُميتُI was struck بِهِwith it
وَلاnor أَقولُI say حَصاةُthe pebble of الحَظِّfortune ماnot رَشَحَتexuded moisture
I do not blame Time for a plight thrust upon me,
Nor say, 'The pebble of fortune has shed no moisture.'
وَكَيفَand how أَنسُبُI attribute فَرطَthe excess of البُخلِstinginess فيto زَمَنٍan age
أَكُفُّهُits hands بِبَقاthrough the continued presence of أَمثالِكُمthe likes of you سَمَحَتgave generously
And how could I ascribe excessive stinginess to an age
Whose hands have given freely because men like you remain?
لَئِنeven if نَأَتgrew distant عَنكُمُfrom you يَوماًone day جَوانِحُناour ribs
فَإِنَّyet surely أَرواحَناour souls فيin رَبعِكُمyour abode جَنَحَتsettled
Even if our ribs should one day draw far from you,
Yet our souls have settled in your abode.
وَكُلَّand every يَومٍday مَقاليmy saying عِندَupon ذِكرِكُمُmentioning you
ياO ساكِنيdwellers of السَفحِthe slope كَمhow many عَينٍan eye بِكُمfor you سَفَحَتshed tears
And every day, whenever you are mentioned, I say:
O dwellers of the slope, how many an eye has shed tears for you!
