Thus let the noble man endure,
So let the noble man show patience
when calamities descend upon his courtyard.
When calamities descend in his courtyard

He gladdens the soul, then conceals a sorrow
Gladdening the soul then saddening in grief
even part of which constricts a spacious breast.
Strait is the expansive chest constrained

And show might to enemies, lest
gloaters reproach him or find fault with him.
The censors reproach him or disparage

And one of your eminence, Nur al-Din, is one whom
The like of you, Nur al-Din, is one whom
no recurring calamities he faces can unsettle.
No misfortunes disquiet before him

For in the realm's battles you are a calamity,
You are regal in the kingdom’s realm
and on the day of debate, its orator.
And on the day of strife, he has a spokesman

Calamities fear you when you rebuke them,
Foes fear you when disasters deter them
and distresses are dispelled when you glance at them.
And show themselves when sorrows confront them

And a gaze, all of its glances are hearts

Indeed, death's hand—may you be protected from it—
The hand of harm will never touch you
whose arrows of calamity always strike true,
Its arrows of calamities will never strike

has shown you, in the loss of Fakhr al-Din, a calamity
After the loss of Pride of the Faith, derision
for which gallbladders, not garment collars, are torn.
Rends open bosoms, not just pockets

A generous man, with no deafness in his bounty's hearing,
Bounteous, no begging is heard from him
nor any frown upon the face of his giving.
Nor gloom seen on the face of his asker

Men would stand to defend him
their hearts buttoned over their coats of mail,
Hearts don armor over their chest plates

In white mail so ants of death
creeping across the blades' flat faces;
Crawl on its surface while it gleams

With steeds whenever they rear up
armor and the keen-edged sword dispel it.
Armor and sword flashing defend them

As though the dust they stir were a cloud,
As if stirrups' dust were clouds
driven onward by a south wind from their hooves.

لِآلِكَ حينَ تَشهَدُ أَو تَغيبُ
O Fakhr al-Din, how much glory you raised up
Pride of the Faith how highly you exalt
for your family, whether present or absent!
Your family when witnessed or absent

وَعِشتَ وَأَنتَ في الدُنيا غَريبُ
Against my wishes, you spend the night in a strange abode,
Despite my anguish you night in a foreign house
and you lived as a stranger in this world.
And live while in the world a stranger

And the hope of lofty honors is bereft of you,
Deprived of you are hopes of glory
and that fertile pasture grows barren.
As others enjoy the fertile rapture

And men of ability call you, but you hold no converse,
Paupers call you but do not confide
and seekers of bounty ask you, but you give no reply.
Beggars ask yet you do not answer

And the alms of praise are apportioned among mankind,
And people allot charity of praise
yet you have no share in their assessable wealth.
While you have no share in their profits

You vanished from sight—and what sun
You hid from sight - what sun
shines without a setting?
Radiates with no point to set?

So be patient, sons of Ishaq, be patient!
So patience O Isaac’s scions, patience
For the Lord of life rewards with goodness.
For the Lord of life will reward with grace

تَكادُ الراسِياتُ بِهِ تَذوبُ
And may He ease for you, Nur al-Din, a sorrow
And solace Nur al-Din in sadness
that almost makes the steadfast mountains melt.
Firm mountains nearly melt from it
فَإِنَّfor indeed قَريبَnear ماwhat تَخشىyou fear بَعيدٌdistant

For what you fear as near is far away,
What you dread is soon to pass
and what you hope for as distant is near.
What you hope for far yet near

And death in this world is no wonder;
No permanence exists in the world
but staying alive in it is a wonder.
But remaining in it is miraculous
