وَطِرفٍand a noble steed تَخَيَّرتُهُI chose it طُرفَةًas a rare treasure
وَطِرفٍ تَخَيَّرتُهُ طُرفَةً
وَأَحبَبتُهُand I loved it مِنamong جَميعِall التُراثِthe inherited possessions
وَأَحبَبتُهُ مِن جَميعِ التُراثِ
And a fine steed I singled out as a rarity;
And a noble steed I chose as a rare treasure,
I loved it above all that I inherited.
and cherished among all my inherited possessions.
حَوىit combined بِبَدائِعِin the wonders of أَوصافِهِits qualities
حَوى بِبَدائِعِ أَوصافِهِ
مَضاءَmettle الذُكورِthe males (stallions) وَصَبرَand endurance الإِناثِthe females (mares)
مَضاءَ الذُكورِ وَصَبرَ الإِناثِ
Among its marvelous qualities, it combined
It combined, in its wondrous qualities,
the dash of stallions with the endurance of mares.
the mettle of stallions and the endurance of mares.
إِذاwhen اِنقَضَّit swoops كَالصَقرِlike a falcon فيin مَعرَكٍa battle
إِذا اِنقَضَّ كَالصَقرِ في مَعرَكٍ
تَرىyou see الخَيلَthe horses فيin إِثرِهِits wake كَالبُغاثِlike weak birds
تَرى الخَيلَ في إِثرِهِ كَالبُغاثِ
When it plunged like a falcon into battle,
When it swoops like a falcon in battle,
you saw the horses in its wake as bughāth—feeble birds.
you see the horses in its wake like weak birds.
طَويلِlong الثَلاثِthe three قَصيرِshort الثَلاثِthe three
طَويلِ الثَلاثِ قَصيرِ الثَلاثِ
عَريضِbroad الثَلاثِthe three فَسيحِspacious الثَلاثِthe three
عَريضِ الثَلاثِ فَسيحِ الثَلاثِ
Long in three, short in three;
Long in three features, short in three,
broad in three, spacious in three.
