O gazelle whose beauty has captured lions,
O gazelle, the lions have captured her beauty
Yet we see gazelles hunted by the hunter.
And we see the hunters hunting her down
أَصمَتslew outright لَواحِظُكِyour glances القُلوبَthe hearts بِأَسهُمٍwith arrows
لَمdid not يُغنِavail عَنهاfor them نَثرَةٌa coat of mail وَدِلاصُand polished armor
Your glances have slain hearts with arrows;
Your glances have silenced hearts with their arrows
Neither mail nor polished armor could protect them.
Neither coquetry nor grace could save her
فَهَبيso suppose جَرَحتُI wounded الخَدَّthe cheek مِنكَof yours بِنَظرَةٍwith a glance
أَفَماis there then no لِأَسرِfor the captivity القَلبِof the heart مِنكَby you خَلاصُrelease
Suppose, then, that I wounded your cheek with a glance;
So I was struck on the cheek by your glance
Is there, then, no release for the heart you hold captive?
Is there no relief for the captives of your heart?
هاbehold قَدalready جَرَحتِyou wounded بِنَبلِwith the arrows of عَينَيكِyour two eyes الحَشىthe vitals
فَدَعيso leave alone فُؤاديmy heart فَالجُروحُfor wounds قِصاصُequal retribution
Behold, you have already wounded my vitals with your eyes’ arrows;
You have wounded the innermost heart with your eye's arrows
So leave my heart alone, for wounds are requited in kind.
So leave my heart be, for wounds seek vengeance
