إِذاif عَلِمَlearned العِداthe enemies عَنكَfrom you اِنتِقاليmy departure
فَخُذthen take ماwhatever شِئتَyou wish مِنof قيلٍhearsay وَقالِand gossip
If the enemies learn of my departure from you,
When your enemies learn of my departure from you
then take all you wish of hearsay and gossip.
Take whatever is said of me as you wish
وَنالواand they assailed مِنكَof yours بِالأَقوالِwith words عِرضاًhonor
وَقَيناهُwe guarded it بِأَطرافِwith the tips of العَواليlofty spears
And with words they will assail your honor,
They have maligned me with words
which we guarded with the tips of lofty spears.
But we have paid them no heed
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas العَذولُthe reproacher يَوَدُّhe wishes أَنّيthat I
أُسيغُI stomach لَهُfor him اليَسيرَa little مِنَof المَقالِspeech
The reproacher had wished that I
The slanderer wished I would
would stomach a little of his talk.
Make light of him with my speech
فَكَيفَthen how إِذاwhen تَيَقَّنَhe became certain فيكَtoward you زُهديmy indifference
وَكانَand used to يَسُرُّهُit pleases him عَنكَaway from you اِشتِغاليmy distraction
How, then, when he becomes certain of my indifference to you,
How will he feel now, convinced of my devotion to you
when being distracted from you used to delight him?
Happy that I pay him no attention
فَكَمfor how often سَخِطَwas displeased الأَنامُthe people وَأَنتَwhile you راضٍcontent
وَكَمand how often رَخُصَgrew cheap المِلاحُthe beauties وَأَنتَwhile you غاليdear
For how often were people displeased while you were content,
How the people resent you, yet you are content
and how often were beauties cheap while you were dear!
How cheap are flatterers, yet you are priceless
وَكَمand how often هَدَمَتdemolished حِمىthe sanctuary of قَوميmy people خُطوبٌcalamities
تَهُدُّtopple الراسِياتِfirmly rooted mountains وَأَنتَwhile you عاليlofty
And how often calamities demolished my people's sanctuary,
How many glories of my people were ruined
calamities that topple firmly rooted mountains, while you remained lofty!
By calamities that shake even mountains, yet you stand tall
وَكَمand how many مِنof وَقعَةٍa battle لِعِداكَagainst your enemies عِنديto my credit
نَذَرتُI pledged بِهاin it دَميmy blood وَنَذَرتُand I pledged ماليmy wealth
And how many a battle against your enemies is to my credit,
How many times, when your enemies wronged me
in which I pledged my blood and pledged my wealth!
I vowed to sacrifice my blood and wealth
وَكَمand how often هَمَّتintended كِلابُthe dogs of الحَيِّthe encampment نَهضاًto spring up
وَقَدand already حَمَتِprotected الأُسودُthe lions حِمىthe sanctuary of الغَزالِthe gazelle
And how often the encampment's dogs were poised to spring,
How often the curs stirred to attack
while lions had guarded the gazelle's sanctuary!
While lions protected the sanctity of gazelles
وَكَمand how often لامَتreproached عَليكَover you سَراةُthe nobles of أَهليmy family
فَأَحسَبُso I deem قَولَthe words of آليmy kin لَمعَa shimmer of آلِa mirage
And how often the nobles of my family reproached me over you,
How my clan blamed you
so I deem my kin's words a mirage's shimmer.
I'd think my family's words enlightened
وَكَمand how often خاطَرتُI took risks فوكَyour mouth (unclear here) بِبَذلِby offering نَفسيmy life
وَأَعلَمُand I know أَنَّthat باليmy mind فيكَover you باليworn out
And how often I took risks by offering my life [“your mouth” is unclear here],
How I risked myself for you
and I know that my mind is worn out over you.
Knowing my affliction stems from you
وَكَمand how many صَبٍّa lovesick man تَفاءَلَsaw a good omen فيin حَبيبٍa beloved
وَفىkept faith ليwith me إِنَّindeed حِبّيmy beloved ماnot وَفىkept faith ليwith me
And how many a lovesick man saw a good omen in a beloved
How many glimpsed good fortune in a loved one
who kept faith with me; indeed, my beloved kept no faith with me.
But for me, my love brought no fortune
وَكَمand how many جَرَّبتُI tried قَبلَكَbefore you مِنof مَليحٍa beautiful one
فَأَمسىso became جيدُthe neck of حالِيَmy condition مِنهُthrough him حاليadorned
And how many a beautiful one I tried before you,
How many fair ones I tried before you
so the neck of my fortune became adorned through him.
Yet my state with them became my state with you
وَلَولاand were it not for أَنَّthat فيin التَجريبِtesting فَضلاًmerit
لَماwould not فَضُلَsurpass اليَمينُthe right hand عَلىover الشِمالِthe left hand
And were there no merit in testing,
But for the merit in trying,
the right hand would not surpass the left.
The right would not exceed the left
أَظُنُّكَI think you إِذsince حَوَيتَyou gathered الحُسنَbeauty طُرّاًentirely
وَإِذand since وَفَّيتَyou fulfilled أَقسامَthe aspects of الجَمالِloveliness
I think that, since you gathered beauty in its entirety,
I think that in your perfect beauty
and since you fulfilled every aspect of loveliness,
And as you embody all aspects of beauty
قَصَدتَyou intended بِأَنby the fact that جَعَلتَyou made العُذرَexcuse عَيباًa flaw
عَساهُperhaps it يَقيكَprotects you مِنfrom عَينِthe evil eye of الكَمالِperfection
you intended, by making excuse a flaw,
You sought to make imperfection a flaw
that it might shield you from the evil eye that perfection draws.
Lest the evil eye mar your perfection
فَسَوفَso will أَسوءُI distress نَفسيmyself بِاِنقِطاعيby my breaking away
بِحيثُso that أُسِرُّI gladden نَفسَكَyour soul بِاِرتِحاليby my departure
So I shall grieve myself by breaking away,
So I will wrong myself by leaving you
so as to gladden your soul with my departure.
To delight you by my absence
إِذاif ماever (emphasis) شِئتَyou wish أَنto تَسلوforget حَبيباًa beloved
فَأَكثِرthen increase دونَهُwithout him عَدَدَthe number of اللَياليthe nights
If ever you wish to forget a beloved,
If you wish to console a lover
then multiply the number of nights apart from him.
Then count the nights without him aplenty
