قالَتshe said كَحَلتَyou lined with kohl الجُفونَthe eyelids بِالوَسنِwith drowsiness
قالَت كَحَلتَ الجُفونَ بِالوَسنِ
قُلتُI said اِرتِقاباًin anticipation لَطيفِكِof your apparition الحَسنِlovely
قُلتُ اِرتِقاباً لَطيفِكِ الحَسنِ
She said, “You have lined your eyelids with the kohl of drowsiness.”
She said, "You have kohl'd your eyelids with sadness."
I said, “In anticipation of your lovely apparition.”
I said, "Awaiting your beautiful arrival."
قالَتshe said تَسَلَّيتَyou found consolation بَعدَafter فُرقَتِناour parting
قالَت تَسَلَّيتَ بَعدَ فُرقَتِنا
فَقُلتُso I said عَنfor مَسكَنيmy dwelling وَعَنand for سَكَنيmy repose
فَقُلتُ عَن مَسكَني وَعَن سَكَني
She said, “You have found consolation after our parting.”
She said, "You've consoled yourself after our separation."
So I said, “For my dwelling and my repose.”
I said, "About my dwelling and my home."
قالَتshe said تَشاغَلتَyou distracted yourself عَنfrom مَحَبَّتِناour love
قالَت تَشاغَلتَ عَن مَحَبَّتِنا
قُلتُI said بِفَرطِwith an excess of البُكاءِweeping وَالحَزَنِand grief
قُلتُ بِفَرطِ البُكاءِ وَالحَزَنِ
She said, “You have distracted yourself from our love.”
She said, "You've been distracted from our love."
I said, “With excessive weeping and grief.”
I said, "With excessive weeping and sorrow."
قالَتshe said تَناسَيتَyou pretended to forget قُلتُI said عافِيَتيmy health
قالَت تَناسَيتَ قُلتُ عافِيَتي
قالَتshe said تَناءَيتَyou distanced yourself قُلتُI said عَنfrom وَطَنيmy homeland
قالَت تَناءَيتَ قُلتُ عَن وَطَني
She said, “You have pretended to forget.” I said, “My health.”
She said, "You've forgotten." I said, "My health."
She said, “You have distanced yourself.” I said, “From my homeland.”
She said, "You've distanced yourself." I said, "From my homeland."
قالَتshe said تَخَلَّيتَyou let go قُلتُI said عَنof جِلديmy skin
قالَت تَخَلَّيتَ قُلتُ عَن جِلدي
قالَتshe said تَغَيَّرتَyou changed قُلتُI said فيin بَدَنيmy body
قالَت تَغَيَّرتَ قُلتُ في بَدَني
She said, “You have let go.” I said, “Of my skin.”
She said, "You've abandoned." I said, "My skin."
She said, “You have changed.” I said, “In my body.”
She said, "You've changed." I said, "In my body."
قالَتshe said تَخَصَّصتَyou set yourself apart دونَapart from صُحبَتِناour company
قالَت تَخَصَّصتَ دونَ صُحبَتِنا
فَقُلتُso I said بِالغَبنِwith loss فيكَover you وَالغَبَنِand poor judgment
فَقُلتُ بِالغَبنِ فيكَ وَالغَبَنِ
She said, “You have set yourself apart from our company.”
She said, "You've isolated yourself from our company."
So I said, “With loss over you, and poor judgment.”
I said, "With loss in you and loss in me."
قالَتshe said أَذَعتَyou divulged الأَسرارَthe secrets قُلتُI said لَهاto her
قالَت أَذَعتَ الأَسرارَ قُلتُ لَها
صَيَّرَmade سِرّيmy secret هَواكِlove for you كَالعَلَنِlike something public
صَيَّرَ سِرّي هَواكِ كَالعَلَنِ
She said, “You have divulged the secrets.” I said to her:
She said, "You've divulged secrets." I said to her,
“My love for you has made my secret plain for all to see.”
"Your love made my secret public."
قالَتshe said سَرَرتَyou gladdened الأَعداءَthe enemies قُلتُI said لَهاto her
قالَت سَرَرتَ الأَعداءَ قُلتُ لَها
ذَلِكَthat شَيءٌsomething لَوif شِئتَyou wished لَمnot يَكُنِcome to be
ذَلِكَ شَيءٌ لَو شِئتَ لَم يَكُنِ
She said, “You have gladdened the enemies.” I said to her:
She said, "You've made the enemies happy." I said to her,
“That is something that, had you wished, would not have happened.”
"That is something which, had you wished, would not have been."
قالَتshe said فَماذاthen what تَرومُyou seek قُلتُI said لَهاto her
قالَت فَماذا تَرومُ قُلتُ لَها
ساعَةَan hour سَعدٍof good fortune بِالوَصلِthrough union تُسعِدُنيyou make me happy
ساعَةَ سَعدٍ بِالوَصلِ تُسعِدُني
She said, “Then what do you seek?” I said to her:
She said, "Then what do you intend?" I said to her,
“An hour of bliss, when you make me happy through union.”
"An hour of joy with you brings me happiness."
قالَتshe said فَعَينُbut the eye الرَقيبِof the watcher تَنظُرُناwatches us
قالَت فَعَينُ الرَقيبِ تَنظُرُنا
قُلتُI said فَإِنّيfor indeed I لِلعَينِto the eye لَمnot أَبِنِbecome visible
قُلتُ فَإِنّي لِلعَينِ لَم أَبِنِ
She said, “But the watcher’s eye is watching us.”
She said, "The watcher's eye looks upon us."
I said, “For I am not visible to the eye.
I said, "I have not built for the eye."
أَنحَلتِنيyou wasted me away بِالصُدودِthrough rejection مِنكِfrom you فَلَوso if
أَنحَلتِني بِالصُدودِ مِنكِ فَلَو
تَرَصَّدَتنيlay in wait for me المَنونُDeath لَمnot تَرَنيsee me
تَرَصَّدَتني المَنونُ لَم تَرَني
You have wasted me away by your rejection, so that if
You've separated me with your aloofness, so if
Death lay in wait for me, it would not see me.”
