وَلَمّاAnd when رَأَيناwe saw المَنعَwithholding مِنكُمfrom you سَجِيَّةًan innate trait
وَمازِلتُAnd I kept بِالتَكليفِin making demands مُستَفرِغاًexpending fully جُهديmy effort
And when we saw that withholding was your nature,
When we saw your stern refusal
And I kept expending all my effort in making demands,
And I persisted in my efforts, fully exerting myself,
عَدَلناwe turned إِلىto التَخفيفِeasing the burden عَنّاfrom us وَعَنكُمُand from you
وَصِرناAnd we began نُجازيrepaying بِالدُعاءِwith prayers عَنِfor الوِدِّaffection
We turned to easing the burden on ourselves and you,
We turned to lightening the burden from us and you
And we began repaying affection with prayers.
And began repaying goodwill with prayer instead of affection
خَلَصناwe were freed وَأَسقَطناand set aside التَجَمُّلَformal courtesies بَينَناbetween us
فَلاSo neither سَيِّديmy master يُعطيgives وَلاnor عَبدُهُhis servant يُهديoffers gifts
We were freed, and set aside the formal courtesies between us:
We were set free and dropped the pretense between us
So neither my master gives nor his servant offers gifts.
So neither master gives nor servant offers
