أَطَعتُ ما سَنَّ أَعدائي وَما فَرَضوا

أَطَعتُ ما سَنَّ أَعدائي وَما فَرَضوا

وَشاهَدوكَ بِسُخطي راضِياً فَرَضوا

وَشاهَدوكَ بِسُخطي راضِياً فَرَضوا

I obeyed what my enemies prescribed and what they imposed.

I obeyed what my enemies decreed

They saw you content with my anger, and so were content.

And they saw you satisfied with my anger

تَشَيَّعوا إِذ رَأوا تَفريقَنا شِيَعاً

تَشَيَّعوا إِذ رَأوا تَفريقَنا شِيَعاً

وَسُنَّةَ العَدلِ في دينِ الهَوى رَفَضوا

وَسُنَّةَ العَدلِ في دينِ الهَوى رَفَضوا

They became partisans when they saw us divided into factions,

They rejoiced when they saw our separation in factions

and rejected the tradition of justice in the religion of love.

And they rejected the Sunnah of justice in the religion of passion

أَعياهُمُ السَعيُ فيما بَينَنا زَمَناً

أَعياهُمُ السَعيُ فيما بَينَنا زَمَناً

فَمُذ رَأوا فُرصَةً في بَينَنا نَهَضوا

فَمُذ رَأوا فُرصَةً في بَينَنا نَهَضوا

For a time, their efforts to come between us exhausted them;

Their efforts between us wearied them for a period

then, seeing a chance in our estrangement, they sprang into action.

So when they saw an opportunity between us they rose up

بَنوا لَديكَ بِناءً لا ثَباتَ لَهُ

بَنوا لَديكَ بِناءً لا ثَباتَ لَهُ

وَما دَروا أَيَّ وُدٍّ بَينَنا نَقَضوا

وَما دَروا أَيَّ وُدٍّ بَينَنا نَقَضوا

They built before you a structure that cannot stand,

They built for you a building with no stability

not knowing what affection between us they had undone.

And they did not know what affection between us they destroyed

يا مَن تُقَطِّبُ مِنّي حينَ أَمنَحُهُ

يا مَن تُقَطِّبُ مِنّي حينَ أَمنَحُهُ

أُنساً وَأَبسَطُ آمالي فَيَنقَبِضُ

أُنساً وَأَبسَطُ آمالي فَيَنقَبِضُ

O you who frown at me when I offer you

O you who frowns at me when I befriend him

companionship and unfold my hopes, only for you to withdraw;

And extend my hopes so he recoils

وَمَن تَعَرَّضَ لي حَتّى أُعارِضُهُ

وَمَن تَعَرَّضَ لي حَتّى أُعارِضُهُ

يَوماً فَيُعرِضُ عَنّي ثُمَّ يَعتَرِضُ

يَوماً فَيُعرِضُ عَنّي ثُمَّ يَعتَرِضُ

and you who sought me out until I met you

And whoever confronts me until I oppose him

one day, only to turn away from me, then object.

One day, so he turns away from me then objects to me

لا بارَكَ اللَهُ لِلأَعداءِ فيكَ وَلا

لا بارَكَ اللَهُ لِلأَعداءِ فيكَ وَلا

هَناكَ مَن لَكَ عَنّي مِنهُمُ العِوَضُ

هَناكَ مَن لَكَ عَنّي مِنهُمُ العِوَضُ

May God grant the enemies no blessing in you, nor

May Allah not bless the enemies through you

may whoever among them replaces me for you bring you joy.

Nor is there anyone among them who can compensate for you

وَلا تَعَدّى لِظُلمي في الوُثوقِ بِهِم

وَلا تَعَدّى لِظُلمي في الوُثوقِ بِهِم

وَلا عَلا مِنكَ بَينَ الناسِ ما خَفَضوا

وَلا عَلا مِنكَ بَينَ الناسِ ما خَفَضوا

Nor may trust in them go so far as to wrong me,

Nor did I transgress in trusting them

nor may what they brought low in you rise among people.

Nor did anything they lowered among people rise from you

فَسَوفَ تَعرِفُ مِقداري إِذا سَمِيَت

فَسَوفَ تَعرِفُ مِقداري إِذا سَمِيَت

نُفوسُهُم وَاِنقَضى مِن وَصلِكَ الغَرَضُ

نُفوسُهُم وَاِنقَضى مِن وَصلِكَ الغَرَضُ

For you will know my worth when lofty grow

So you will know my worth when their souls are named

their souls, and the purpose of their bond with you is spent.

And the purpose of your connection has expired
