رَعىmay watch over اللَهُGod مَنthose فارَقتُI parted with يَومَon the day of فِراقِهِمtheir departure
رَعى اللَهُ مَن فارَقتُ يَومَ فِراقِهِم
حُشاشَةَthe last remnant of life نَفسٍa soul وَدَّعَتit bade farewell يَومَon the day وَدَّعواthey bade farewell
حُشاشَةَ نَفسٍ وَدَّعَت يَومَ وَدَّعوا
May God guard those on whose departure-day I parted
May God have mercy on him whom I left the day we parted
With the last remnant of a soul that bade farewell the day they did;
A downhearted soul bid farewell the day they departed
وَمَنand those ظَعَنَتit departed رَوحيmy soul وَقَدwhile already سارَset out ظَعنُهُمtheir caravan
وَمَن ظَعَنَت رَوحي وَقَد سارَ ظَعنُهُم
فَلَمso did not أَدرِI know أَيُّwhich of الظاعِنينَthe departing ones أُشَيّعُI see off
فَلَم أَدرِ أَيُّ الظاعِنينَ أُشَيّعُ
And those with whom my soul departed as their caravan set out—
And he whose absence my spirit resented though he had marched away
So I knew not which of the departing ones to see off.
I know not which of the two absent ones should I mourn
