لَنwill not يَقضِيَfulfill الحاجاتِthe needs إِلّاexcept دِرهَمٌa dirham
عَزَّgained honor الغَنيُّthe rich man وَدِرهَمٌand a dirham لِمُؤَمِّلِfor one who hopes
Only a dirham will fulfill needs.
No wish is granted save by the dirham's might,
The rich man has gained honor; and a dirham for one who hopes
The rich man’s pride, the pauper’s sweet delight.
يُدنيbrings near لَكَto you الغَرَضَthe goal البَعيدَdistant بِسِحرِهِby its magic
وَيَحُلَّand unties عُقدَةَthe knot كُلِّevery أَمرٍmatter مُشكِلِperplexing
Brings the distant goal near to you by its magic,
It brings you close the aims you wished so far,
And unties the knot of every perplexing matter.
And solves the problems hard that make you star.
فَإِذاso when فَهِمتَyou understood السِرَّthe secret فيهِwithin it رَأَيتَهُyou saw it
ذُخرَa treasure المُؤَمِّلِthe hopeful one نُزهَةَa delight المُتَأَمِّلِthe contemplative one
So when you understand the secret within it, you see it as
If you but fathom, you will grasp its worth,
The hopeful one's treasure, the contemplative one's delight.
A joyful treasure for the man of dearth,
وَإِذاand when نَظَرتَyou looked إِلىat أَسِرَّةِthe lines وَجهِهِits face
لَمَعَتthey gleamed كَلَمعِlike the flash العارِضِthe cloud المُتَهَلِّلِradiant
And when you look at the lines of its face,
And if you look upon its lovely face,
They gleam like the flash of a radiant cloud.
It shines as shining rain in time of grace.
