Spring has arrived: welcome to its coming,

and to the radiance of its splendor and the blossoms of its roses,

and to its lovely appearance and the sweetness of its breeze,

and its elegant attire and the embroidery of its mantles.

A season which, when Time boasts, is indeed

the pupil of its eye and the choicest verse of its poem.

Its breeze spares the constitution the need for treatment,

through gentleness, both when it blows and when it rests.

Oh, how lovely are its flowers and its fruits,

and the growth of its shoots and the grain of its harvest!

And the birds' answering calls in its trees

are like Maʿbad's 'daughters' amid the cadences of his lute.

And the branch has been clothed in light robes, after

Kanun's two hands began stripping it bare.

It regained youth after gray-haired age, and there flowed

the water of youth through the roots of its stem.

And the rose atop the branches seems

a king surrounded by the elite of his troops.

And the orange blossom seems a strand of pearls,

a necklace for the twig, around its neck.

And the jasmine is like a lover wasted by

the beloved's cruelty in abandoning and shunning him.

And look at its delightful narcissus, as though it were

an eye awakened after its long slumber.

And marvel at its marigolds and yellow oxeye flowers,

like gold gleaming in its varied coins.

And look at the strands made from its stock blossoms,

varied in their sections and their necklaces.

And do you not see the delicate cloud, and what appears

to the eye of its shapes and drifting masses?

And the clouds hold mourning rites in the sky,

while earth is at Time's wedding and festival.

They lamented, so the anemone tore its collars for them,

and earth's iris turned blue from slapping its cheeks.

And the water is unbound in the current of the Tigris,

while the bridge is in its shackles and chains.

And the cloud mimics water in its flow,

and water mimics the cloud in its rippling folds.

So go early to a meadow whose shade is lovely,

for delight lies between its breadth and its length.

And when you see the fresh growth of a flourishing meadow,

sip aged wine upon its fresh greenery,

from the hand of a slender-waisted one whose manner doubles

the wine's intoxication with his singing and song.

Clear-skinned: when you look at him, you see

your own likeness in the clarity of his cheeks.

And when you have reached a limit with wine,

then drink less, to rekindle understanding after it has died down.

For wine, when its measure increases

in drinking, leaves the drinker diminished.
