رُبَّmany a يَومٍday قَدindeed رَفَلتُI strutted بِهِon it
فيin ثِيابِrobes اللَهوِpleasure وَالمَرَحِand mirth

In robes of pleasure and mirth.
أَشرَقَتshone forth شَمسُthe sun المُدامِwine بِهِon it
وَجَبينُand the brow الصُبحِof dawn لَمnot يَلُحِgleam
On it, the sun of wine shone forth,
While the brow of dawn had not yet gleamed.
فَظَلَلناso we remained بَينَbetween مُغتَبِقٍan evening wine-drinker
بِحُمَيّاهاwith its intoxicating heat وَمُصطَبِحِand a morning wine-drinker

Of its heady fire, and others morning draughts.
وَشَدَتand sang فيin الدَوحِthe tall trees صادِحَةٌa songbird
بِضُروبِwith varieties of السَجعِrhymed song وَالمُلَحِand charming turns

And a songbird sang in the tall trees,
With varied rhymed songs and charming turns.
كُلَّماwhenever ناحَتshe lamented عَلىupon شَجَنٍa bough
خِلتُهاI imagined her غَنَّتshe sang عَلىover قَدَحِa goblet
Whenever she lamented upon a bough,
I fancied she sang over a goblet.
