حَوَتshe combined ضِدّينِtwo opposites إِذwhen ضَرَبَتshe played وَغَنَّتand sang
حَوَت ضِدّينِ إِذ ضَرَبَت وَغَنَّت
فَقَدfor indeed ساءَتshe displeased وَسُرَّتand delighted مَنwhoever رَآهاsaw her
فَقَد ساءَت وَسُرَّت مَن رَآها
She combined two opposites when she played and sang;
She contained opposites when she struck and sang
for she displeased and delighted whoever saw her:
So she displeased and pleased whoever saw her
غِناءٌsinging تَستَحِقُّshe deserves عَليهِfor it ضَرباًa beating
غِناءٌ تَستَحِقُّ عَليهِ ضَرباً
وَضَرباًand playing تَستَحِقُّshe deserves بِهِthrough it غِناهاher wealth
وَضَرباً تَستَحِقُّ بِهِ غِناها
singing for which she deserves a beating,
Singing deserving of strikes
and playing for which she deserves to be rich.
And strikes making her singing deserved
