My drowsy eyes did tell at dawn
in the morning of the happy evening.
Of joyful eve that now was gone

And from their languor we discerned a vigor
In languor we soon vigor found
they had shown in plundering the roses of cheeks.
As red returned to cheeks once pale

And we knew why the pleasure of slumber was forsaken,
And grief was cured when love prevailed
from what they brought back from the martyr.

Of blissful life that is no more
