Oh, the delight of a day in the green meadows!

I stole it stealthily from my life.

And the dew had crowned the flower heads,

So the sweet scent perfumed the surroundings.

I visited them early, after dawn had broken,

    As the crimson twilight spread.

And the birds glided across the waters' expanse,

As though they were ships upon a sea.

Until, when they sought refuge by the riverbank,

I called my slave, and he came with my falcon,

One of the heavy, red-plumed young falcons,

Free of skittishness, abundant in patience,

Well-proportioned in body, strong of back,

Broad of breast, spacious of chest,

Wide of eye, broad of back,

With eyes as black as ink,

And a massive head like a pounding stone,

As though above his breast and throat

    Were a male ostrich's head between a vulture's ears.

With ten long flight feathers on the wing,

With short feathers on the reddish tail,

With a short leg-bone and fully developed talons.

Then he kept pursuing them, immensely cunning,

Stirring against them his resolve and my aid,

As though he pursued them for a blood-debt.

So he brought us every dust-colored bird among them.

So I spent the night there with my companions in joy,

As though we were on the day of the Feast of Sacrifice,

Eating their meat and feeding guests.
