قَدindeed هَتَكَlaid bare الدَمعُthe tears مِنهُfrom him ماwhat سَتَراhe concealed
وَإِنand if تُرِدyou desire خُبرَknowledge of حالِهِhis state سَتَرىyou will see
His tears have laid bare what he had concealed.
The tears have uncovered what was once concealed
And if you seek to know his state, you will see:
And if you wish to know of his state, you will see
صَبٌّa lovesick man أَسَرَّkept secret الهَوىlove وَكَتَّمَهُand concealed it
فَعِندَماthen when فاضَoverflowed دَمعُهُhis tears ظَهَراit appeared
A lovesick man kept his love secret and concealed it;
Love has taken him captive and keeps him hidden
Then, when his tears overflowed, it came to light.
So when his tears overflowed, it became apparent
لاdo not تَعجَبواmarvel إِنif جَرَتflowed مَدامِعُهُhis tears
بَلِrather اِعجَبواmarvel لِلفِراقِat the parting كَيفَhow جَرىit happened
Do not marvel if his tears flow;
Be not surprised if his tears flow
Rather, marvel at how the parting came to pass.
Rather, be amazed that separation caused this
شامَbeheld بُروقَthe lightning flashes of الشامِal-Sham ناظِرُهُhis eye
فَأَرسَلَتso sent down سُحبُthe clouds of دَمعِهِhis tears مَطَراrain
His eye beheld the lightning flashes of al-Sham,
Damascus's lightning flashed before his eyes
So the clouds of his tears sent down rain.
So his tear clouds sent down rain
لَمّاwhen تَراقىrose مِنfrom حَرِّthe heat of لَوعَتِهِhis anguish
لَهيبُthe flame of نارٍa fire بِقَلبِهِin his heart اِستَعَراblazed
When, from the heat of his anguish, there rose
When the flames of his burning anguish
The flame of a fire blazing in his heart,
Ignited a fire in his heart that blazed
تَكاتَفَgathered thickly الدَمعُthe tears فيin مَحاجِرِهِhis eye sockets
فَإِنand if أَذابَتهُmelted it نارُهُhis fire قَطَراit dripped
Tears gathered thickly in his eye sockets;
His tears gathered in his eyelids
And if his fire melts them, they fall in drops.
And if his fire melted them, they dripped as drops
