Give alms, for we are in a state

That adorns Time’s neck with favors,

Doubles the brave man’s might through safety,

And weakens the coward’s heart through terror.

In its air, the ears are delighted

By the channel’s roar and the singing slave women’s song.

And I have a cupbearer who takes wine’s place,

So he intoxicates us with subtle meanings.

And you would take our wine for a soothsayer,

For the lovely qualities it has revealed:

Whenever a young man sips it, it is charged

With unbinding his thoughts and binding his tongue.
