Death charged among us, openly, in broad daylight,

as though death were seeking vengeance.

Whenever I said, "A crescent is growing full,"

the hands of death robbed us of moons.

O my people! From calamity I have found no

escape, nor any triumph over it.

At every turn I blame misfortunes for the loss

of a loved one, and reproach the fates.

O crescent, just as your radiance grew full,

death raided you, and you sank from sight.

A moon whom the earth hastened to eclipse—

and so the earth eclipses moons.

His loss bewildered the mind, so you see the people

drunk, though they are not drunk.

Before losing you, we had never seen a full moon

make its dwelling in dust its dark phase.

I knew that time, even when it grants

    serenity, brings forth troubles.

Yet I was deceived into thinking you would remain,

for you were indeed a beguiling star.

O shoot that wilted and dried up just when

its bough brought forth blossoms and fruit.

We have lost the solace of your kindly nature,

    a loss that taught sleep to flee my eyelids;

a character like the breeze, and a gentleness

that robbed water and wine of their beauty.

O departed one, who filled the heart

with grief over him, and emptied the dwellings,

I do not choose life after your departure,

yet the choice is not mine to make.

Whenever my heart glimpses the lightning of your abode,

the clouds of my tears pour down rain.

And whenever I recall the hours of my joy

with you, remembrance kindles a fire in my heart.

So it is as though remembrance made pilgrimage in my heart,

and there, with sorrow, casts the ritual pebbles.

So I shall weep for you as long as I live, with tears

that leave my eyelids no pardon for faltering.

After losing you, all I can do is

pour forth tears and poems for you.
