لاnot أُلفِيَنَّكَlet me ever find you ثاوياdwelling فيin غُربَةٍa foreign land
إنَّindeed الغريبَthe stranger بِكلِّwith every سَهمٍarrow يُرشَقُis shot at
Let me never find you dwelling in a foreign land.
I will not find you settled in a foreign land
For the stranger is shot at with every arrow.
For the stranger is struck by every arrow
والناسُand people فيin طَلَبِpursuit of المَعَاشِlivelihood وإنّماand only

And people seek a livelihood, yet it is only
And people seek livelihood, yet
By fortune that those among them who receive sustenance are provided for.
Only those destined are provided
ولَوand if أنَّهمthat they رُزِقواwere provided for علىaccording to أقدارهمtheir worth
ألفيتَyou would find أكثرَmost of ماthose whom ترىyou see يَتَصدَّقُbegs for alms
And if they were provided for according to their worth,
And if they were given according to their worth
You would find most of those you see begging for alms.
You would find most of them begging

People are but two kinds of workers: one
People are but two workers; one
Has died of thirst, and another is drowning.
Died of thirst, while the other drowns
