وكمand how many مِنof صَحِيحٍa healthy man باتspent the night للموتِfrom death آمناfeeling safe
أتتهُcame to him المَنَاياdeath بَغتةًsuddenly بعدماafter هَجَعhe fell asleep
And how many a healthy man went to bed feeling safe from death,
Only for death to come upon him suddenly after he fell asleep.
فلمso ... not يستطعhe could إذwhen جاءهcame to him الموتُdeath بَغتَةًsuddenly
فِراراًflight ولاnor مِنهُfrom it بِقُوَّتِهby his strength امتَنَعhe protected himself
So when death came upon him suddenly, he could not
Flee, nor shield himself from it by his strength.
فأصبحso by morning he was تَبكِيهِweeping over him النِّساءُthe women مُقَنَّعاwith his head covered
ولاnor يَسمَعُhe hears الدَّاعِيthe caller وإنeven if صوتُهhis voice رَفَعhe raised
By morning he lay with his head covered, the women weeping over him,
Nor did he hear the caller, even if the caller raised his voice.
وقُرِّبand he was brought close منto لَحدٍa grave's niche فَصَارَso it became مَقِيلَهhis resting place
وفارقand he left behind ماwhat قَدalready كانhe had بالأَمسyesterday قدalready جَمَعamassed
And he was brought close to a grave's niche, which became his resting place,
And he left behind what he had amassed yesterday.
فلاso ... not يَترُكُspares الموتُdeath الغَنِيَّthe rich man لِمَالِهfor his wealth
ولاnor مُعدِماa destitute man فيin المالmoney ذاhaving حاجةٍneed يَدَعit leaves alone
So death does not spare the rich man for his wealth,
Nor does it spare a destitute man in need of money.
