قمر الفؤاد بفاتن النظرِ
And a slender youth, fairer than the moon,
More radiant than the moon is your smile
Won my heart with his bewitching gaze.
Moon of my heart with the charm of your gaze

فأخذتُها منه على غَرَرِ
I stealthily stole the apples of his cheek,
Like an apple is your cheek, your dimple a garden
And took them from him at my peril.
So I stole it from you by sweet cajole

فأخافني قوم فقلت لهم
لاno قطعhand amputation فيfor ثَمَرٍfruit ولاnor كَثَرِpalm pith
لا قطع في ثَمَرٍ ولا كَثَرِ
Some people frightened me, so I told them:
Then some scared me so I told them
“No hand is cut off for fruit or palm pith.”
No cutting of fruit, no matter how plentiful
