تُفَّاحَةٌ أَذكَرَنِي نِصفُهَا
خَدَّcheek حَبِيبِيmy beloved يَومَon the day عَانَقتهI embraced him
خَدَّ حَبِيبِي يَومَ عَانَقته
An apple—half of it reminded me
A half-bitten apple reminds me
of my beloved’s cheek on the day I embraced him;
Of my beloved’s cheek the day we embraced
ونصفهاand its half الآخرthe other شبهتهI likened it
ونصفها الآخر شبهته
بلونto the color of وجهيmy face حينwhen فارقتهI parted from him
بلون وجهي حين فارقته
and its other half I likened
And the other half resembled
to the color of my face when I parted from him.
The hue of my face when we parted
